What's new

Favourite Multi Tool.and any times when it really came in handy ?

I've got 2-3 Leatherman multi tools and they're good. First one I had (many years ago) couldn't lock the blades/tools....so I bought a Swiss Tool by Victorinix. It's very heavy duty, extremely high quality and other than it's weight is my favoured multi tool.

One small multi tool I would not be without and I find very useful to the point that I carry and use it every day is my Leatherman Micro Tool. Extremely handy.

I also carry a modern Leatherman Multi Tool (tools/blades lock on this one) in my car.

But # 1 is the Swiss Tool.

What's your favourite multi tool ?

As far as any times when my multi tools really came in handy ? I haven't fought off any Bears, Cougars or Wolves with one....or survived, marooned on an island due to having one.

But maybe you have. If so how did it help ?

I have a Gerber Recoil. It was my first (and only) multitool. I like it because the ejecting pliers can be a godsend for one-handed applications. I dislike the weight of it though... I have actually found that my pocketknife and linemans pliers duo that I keep in my Bunkergear is lighter and more convenient...

I've carried a small Gerber multi tool for a number of years now and it's been very handy. I've broken the pliers a time or two but was able to return them for a new tool with no hassle. Currently I'm using a Gerber Dime, which appears a lot stronger then my previous Clutch. I have a leatherman Sidekick, which I really like but I think I might pick up one of the bigger Leatherman/SOG multi's at least to keep in the car. I have an uncle who's a diary farmer that's carried a leatherman wave for many years, that tool gets used for everything, gutting deer, cutting branches, fixing a tractor etc. I know's he's broken a few of his but I think he has kind of a rotation going with Leatherman, returning broken ones and using current ones while broken ones get replaced. I know that he's worn out the bearings in the tools from using them so much. Even with having to return them he's stuck with leatherman, Apparently Gerbers and other ones he's tried failed miserably in a few days, where the Leatherman's usually only broke when he pushes their limts, or from just wearing out with so much use. He'd never heard of SOG before though, so I'd be interested in how they compare in the reliability/durability department.

Got a Leatherman Charge Ti. Very solid tool. I'll admit, the screw drivers get used the most, and it has a whole set of different screwdriver/hex/torx bits in the sheath.

Skeletool is my mult-tool of choice. it's never saved my life, but i use it regularly when camping or in my man-purse to cut things, snip things etc.

not a ton of gadgets, no usb stick, no synch with smartphone, no carbon fibre, no cork screw (who really needs a cork screw these days on a multi tool), but has all the basics needed items....and is built like a tank. the built in carabiner is a nice addition to clip on an inside pocket in a backpack etc. i have mine in a leather holster though.

I have a SOG and quite like it, although I think it's biggest drawback is when you use the pliers and you need to really bear down it isn't kind to the hands since the solid wall of the handles end up on the inside instead of the outside. I guess it's so it folds up and carries nice without snagging the accessories. I do like the "compound" idea of the pliers, the top has little "gears" cut into it so you can really grip things firmly if your hands can stand up to the abuse.

I've had a Leatherman PST for over 15 years. A couple issued Gerbers for at least six or eight years.

I most commonly use Gerbers. I don't buy Leathermans. SOG and Victorinox are both excellent if the Gerber doesn't do the trick.

I've unjammed a machine gun with one, disassembled a couple rifles, fixed a couple cars, and done everything from rig snares and fishing bait to conduct field surgery with one.

They do come in handy.

Leatherman Wave and bit kit - I've only owned it for about 6 months and I can't count all the times I've used it. Guitar repair, clipping metal straps off security barriers, disassembling stuck wratchet straps, sawing through bits of wood, as an aid for tightening bolts, pulling nails... You name it. I love the damn thing!

I've been using the SOG PowerAssist for 10 years now, I'm on my second one. The MOST useful it's ever been was while deployed to Afghanistan in 2009. I'm a communications sergeant in the US Army, and this thing was ALWAYS on my hip. Specifically, I could cut wires easily while repairing radios in a hurry in active combat situations on patrols.

Specifically, I remember a time when our MRAP vehicle hit an inprovised explosive device and shattered our radio antenna. I was able to use my SOG to fashion a cable-style tuned antenna in a hurry to radio to the platoon leader that we were ok and had no injuries.

MY only complaint with the SOG in the tool covers. Those little flaps are pretty useless, get in the way when you need to use the thing in a hurry, and break off pretty quickly.

I've always carried a gerber. The one handed pliers access is what sold me. I've always had them lost or stolen before breaking, so durable enough for me.

I keep a Leatherman Wave in my flight bag, and one in my truck. It's come in handy more than a few times in both situations. It has what I need on it and not much extra. I'm definitely happy with it.

I've had a SOG powerlock for about 5 years now. Everything on it is high quality and just plain tough. I can't speak for Gerber's or Leatherman's as I've never owned one, but I can say that, of all the other multitools I've examined, none function nearly as smoothly as the SOG. The way the gears are designed make it's action very smooth, where it can easily be opened with one hand. Like someone said above, the handle can be a bit uncomfortable if you really have the squeeze it hard, but, IMHO, the tradeoff is worth it.

I did try a Gerber but I found it to rattle a lot. I really wanted to like it and the one hand deployment was awesome, but I couldn't get around the looseness of the plier head. I'd be curious to try SOG for the one hand opening

I have a few leathermans as well as a few gerbers. The only one that really gets a lot if use is my style ps. It is on my keychain and is great for fixing glasses, opening a beer, stripping wire, and emergency string removal from clothing as well as occasional splinter removal.
