What's new

Favorite razor is not always best shaver.

I've been building quite a collection of razors over the last 6 weeks. I love it. Definitely addicted. Wet Shaving is a great compliment to Fountain Pen collecting. All of this had been said before, so I'll skip it.

The point of this thread is that, if a friend was to come over and ask me which one of my razors is my FAVORITE, I would probably reach for my Gillette Gold Adjustable Executive. This razor came to me appearing NOS. It's beautiful. That said, I can't get great face shaves with it yet. (100% falls on me and my technique, not the razor.) I just haven't found a way to make it hum for me.

(The Executive is great for my head shaves, just not my face.)

So what would I grab as second in line? Probably an Adjustable Aristocrat Slim. Love it. It's a beauty. Same issue. Haven't gotten a great shave yet.

Next: Probably my Hoffritz slant. I love the design. It's in great shape. I get GREAT head shaves with it, but just haven't been able to nail a great face shave yet. This is my primary head shave razor.

So what gives me the best face shave? A razor that I believe is called an Old Type OC on a cracked Ball End handle. The gold plating on this razor is terrible. Nine different shades at least, ranging from copper to bronze to brown to gold to gunk. Cracked handle. Overall, a real ugly duckling.

BUT: this razor gives me the best face shaves. I love it. I don't want to love it, but I do. It has taken the primary spot in my face shave rotation.

Anyone else out there have this issue?

I've got a newly replated Thin Handle LC New on the way from KronaKruiser. I'm interested to see if i can make it perform like this Ugly Duckling.

Send it to him and turn the ugly duckling into a swan!

I do know what you mean. What we want to like and what we actually do like are two separate things.

I love shooting, and my favourite rifle has a fine walnut stock that I've oiled by hand.

But my "best" rifles have laminate or man-made stocks. They are superior in every way - except looks.

I know what you mean.
My favorite looking razor is the bar handle NEW.
I'm still hoping that it will give me better results.

The fat handle Tech is a close second in that department and it gives me nice, if gentle, shaves.

i thought i had my favourites in my British Aristocrats #15s, Pils, Cobra, and other, but then comes along this innocuous Weber DLC head, and, it changed everything; getting rid of most of my razors, now. Nothing even comes close to the comfort i get with this thing, nothing! Oh well, such is life.

Every day I pickup my favorite razor and get a fantastic shave with it.

Maybe this is because every day I shave with a different razor :001_smile

I'm a minimalist utilitarian so I was only after the best result, not really a collection of razors or rotations with razors that may not be as good as the best one. So, in my quest to find the best razor for me, I went through over 40 vintage and modern DE, SE, injector style razors only to finally settle on a Merkur Progress. I love it as it does everything right for me.

So in my case, my favourite razor is also my best shaver
