Favorite Bath Soap?

What's your favorite bath soap? Do you like the brand stuff or artisan bath soap? By the way, I happen to like Dr. Bronner's Citrus Orange soap.

I like South of France soaps. Maybe because it's triple-milled, it lathers up good with my well water. I'm currently using the Lavender. Not much scent when it's dry or left on the skin after the shower, but during the shower when it's lathered up it smells great.

Thanks to the good folks here at B&B, I've recently been trying out a lot of soaps--from my local artisan soapmaker all the way through what's available at my Indian grocery etc., and my best-bang-for-the-buck choice is Trader Joe's Triple Milled Soap (100% Vegetable, Enriched with Shea Butter), made for them in France by Bisous de Provence.

Two scents are available: Green Tea and Lemon Verbena, both of which are superb. The lather is rich and creamy--almost good enough to shave with! The quality of this soap reminds me of the l'Occitane soap I once used in a hotel--it's really well-made. A big 7 oz. bar will cost you all of $3.29 and will last almost forever.

(If you have a Ross or TJ Maxx store locally, you can sometimes also find some great quality bath soaps there for next to nothing, but it's hit or miss.)

I have tried quite a few artisanal soaps through the years, and my favorite, as well as my wife's, is Mama Bear's Jasmine Nights. I love the way it lathers and the scent is excellent. When I'm not ordering on line, I tend to buy at TJ Maxx or at local craft shows. My wife picked up a bar of lavender/patchouli this morning.

  • Legendary jet-black soap
  • A dense foamy lather
  • Carries a sweet and pleasant aroma
  • Formed with La Toja salts and minerals
  • Size - 2 x 4.4 oz/125 gr
Black soap? It's only the first intriguing aspect of this classic brand. This lanolin and glycerin soap was created in the 1950's using salts and minerals from the fabled therapeutic hot springs of La Toja in Galicia.
This legendary jet-black soap produces a dense white lather that foams in hard and soft water -- even in sea water! The iron oxide slightly darkens the soap while leaving it in a crystalline state, which creates an illusion of total blackness.
The fragrance is based on the fleur-de-lis; it leaves your skin soft and firm. As you lather in the shower, the unique Magno scent, with a personality of its own, fills your room with a lingering fragrance

Ivory (cheap, down side is that it seems to get used faster than other bar soaps)
Old Spice Swagger (new, cheap, and a really nice soap)
L'Occitane Lavender (the best of these three, but $10 for an 8.8oz bar)

My wife and I are currently using L'Occitane Milk for the first time. This soap has been fantastic on my sensitive skin. Prior to L'Occitane, we tried a few bars from Pre de Provence. PdP and L'Occitane both blow most of the drugstore soaps out of water. Once we use up the remaining bars of PdP and L'Occitane, I'll probably make a run to Trader Joe's or Whole Foods to find a more affordable replacement. No complaints so far. Artisan soaps for me.

+1 on Dr. Bronners Orange. The lather explodes out of that thing and it seems to last quite a while. I also use a goats milk soap made locally to me that is a vanilla scent.

I also like Dr Bronners. I use the rose and the almond. I think the rose is the better of the two.
I'd like to check out some artisan soaps such as Mike's in the near
future.

I've tried Speick, MdC Fougere, Mysore Sandalwood, Wm Neumann Juniper and others, but I keep going back to Yardley Oatmeal and Almond. It's $1 a bar, readily available, and smells great and doesn't dry my skin.
