Fatip piccolo

After waiting for a week my "new" fatip piccolo arrived. I was slightly weary about the razors finish after doing some research but sadly enough my concerns became reality this morning. Its finish is no where near as good as my Edwin Jagger or Ikon. As a consolation I hope that it shaves well. It is a real shame that the finish is so poor. My EJ DE89 cost the same and has a beautiful finish.

Sorry you are disappointed with the finish. The Fatips are usually less than impressive in that regard as I think you found out in your research. However, it does shave like a dream.
Hopefully it works well for you. If so, you won't give that lack of high quality finish another thought.

Thanks guys! I have a feeling that it will shave really well too. Will post in a few days to let you know...

I have a FaTip Grande and the finish is alot better than the Piccolo.... IMHO
+1
I have a Grande in gold and the piccolo in nickel. The Grande's finish is of a higher quality though the color of the gold plating leaves a bit to be desired. Gold finishes on Merkurs and vintage razors seem to look more 'gold' than the fatip. Mine is more on the yellowish side - not yellow gold but just yellow...anyways, it too is a great shaver. I don't plan on parting with either of them.

Hi friends

I have used my fatip a few times and it shaves pretty smooth. I kind of like the fact that its finish is not perfect but don't ask why ;)

It needs getting used to like any new razor.

I bought my first Fatip knowing about the finish issues, and have been delighted with its shaving dynamics. It continues to serve as one of my top three razors in terms of frequency of use.

If you do end up liking your Fatip and want a better visual/tactile experience, I suggest one/both of the following:
1. change out the handle for a heavier bulldog type handle - you should notice a remarkable improvement in performance
2. splurge for a Joris-Plisson razor, which has the same head as the Fatip, but is crafted in France with an impeccable Palladium finish

Good luck! and check out the Joris-Fatip thread for more ideas and fun: http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/300217-Joris-Fatip-lovers-reviews-and-pics-thread!

listen to this man will ya!!!

It looks just right to me, flawed and functional. I personally might splurge on replating it if I felt comfortable with the weight and size of the handle.

It's a great razor, but works much better for me with a heavier handle -- Weber Bulldog (pic) or Classic.

I just fitted my fatip head on a ikon bulldog handle. The blade loaded is a personna red(been used 3 times). Will post tomorrow to report how it shaved. My previous shaves with the piccolo were pretty smooth but I believe the bulldog handle will make everything easier.

I think it looks pretty nice for a fifty year old razor. It will certainly outlast many of today's DE razors.
It's not a 50-year-old razor. It's a brand new razor.

I love mine. Sure, the finish is not as nice as an EJ and the price is very similar, but the EJ is made of pot metal and has a gorgeous chrome finish, while the FaTip is made of pure bronze with a nickel finish. Not to mention that fact that the FaTip shaves circles around the EJ.

FaTip is one of my top three razors. I sold my EJ. There's just no comparison between the two, IMHO.

Just finished my shave with fatip/ikon bulldog handle. Face is super smooth. only two points on neck which are slightly red after atg pass. Tomorrow will put the blade in my ej d89 and see how it shaves.(will be the personna reds fifth shave)

I think the bolzano I used at begining of week was probably a dud.. this red ip has so far just given me normal resistance.

The plating of my 5 year old Fatip is better than on my Merkurs from the same time. I did buy it as a Mühle R89 though so maybe the plating was done with a little extra care. There are some reports on problems with blade alignment as well but mine doesn't suffer from that either. I do not use it very often but I will never part from it. I might even pick up a spare...
