FAO Pomade Experts...

I will be attending a huge family wedding next weekend and I am doing my damnest to make sure I have everything just so for the big day. I am considering using a pomade on my hair. I have a 'classic' hairstyle (short on the back and sides and longer on the top with a side-part) and have thick hair with a slight wave. I usually use Redken Workhard Powerpaste, but the matte look it gives means it lacks that classic formal groomed look.

My issue is this - I want the grip/hold and gloss of a pomade but do not want to look greasy and/or too shiny, or like my hair is overwhelmed - helmut hair for example.

I am currently considering three pomades: Black and White, Sweet Georgia Brown (Purple) and Layrite (particularly like the sound of this one as it washes out easily). Any particular reasons to go for one over the other? Any other pomades I should consider?

Any help would be most appreciated. Now, back to learning how to tie a bow-tie! :confused1

Good old Groom & Clean works for me: you don't get a shiny look, holds your hair well, smells pretty good, and it washes out well. And it's fairly cheap.:thumbup1:

I should have mentioned that I live in Britain and so I cannot get Nancy Boy products, but thanks for the tip anyway MinnMD.

As for AC, are you guys talking about the pomade? If so, it really isn't strong enough for my hair-type. I wouldn't mind trying the grooming cream though as that has more of a classic pomade consistency...

Also, I just realised that the online shop I thought stocked Layrite no longer does. So unless someone knows of a British source, that one is out the window too, shame. :-(

I was gonna recommend Layrite based on what your looking for, but doesn't look like you can get it. Groom and Clean is a nice choice if you can find it. It washes out easily and it will give your hair a nice deep classic shine with out looking real greasy, if you need more hold then mix in some pomade for hold. I have used American Crew grooming cream, it will do what you want, i'm not a fan of the smell but it is pretty minimal. It is thick though, so it will provide the hold and shine you are looking for. Congratulations!

Found this online shop, looks great - www.pomade-shop.eu

So it looks like I can get Layrite, I like the look of the Layrite Superhold...

Does it give a soft finish or go hard like a gel? Also, any thoughts on Lucky-13 and LuckyTiger Pomades? Thanks for the tips so far...

+1 for layrite superhold. its not too shiny, washes out like a gel. its al ive used for the last 2years, and ive tried them all before. i have thicker curly hair, and this works good to comb it how i want.

No, it holds just like a pomade. It holds the hair nice but not dry and hard like a gel. Its hard to describe, u just gotta try it. I guarantee ul like it. If not, pm me, and il buy it from u. Ha. I hav like 2 tubs on hand at all times. Lol

Awesome, thanks for the quick response Nerdman, I just ordered some. Can't wait! I'll give it a few test runs before the big day to make sure it's suitable...

Thanks for your help guys, as ever, this forum has shown me the way forward!

Does it set hard like a gel Nerdman?

Hopefully you ordered both the regular layrite and the super layrite. The hold is effected by whether you apply it to dry hair or wet hair. Apply to dry hair you get maximum hold, wet hair- more shine and lighter hold like a 40 weight pomade. When I occasionally use layrite, I will also put some light pomade over it for shine- ie: Royal crown, groom and clean, brylcreem, black and white, sweet georgia brown. This keeps the hair from drying out to like a gell, but you can still easily wash it out. hope this helps.

Thats an impressive pomade ordering site you found, wonder if they ship to the US and how expensive it is?? Wish I could read German.

I only bought the superhold - I prefer to style my hair when it's slightly damp/towel dried. Hopefully I will get the soft shiney hold I am after.

It's a great site isn't it! Click on the English/US flag to switch to English language. They seem to have every pomade ever made...

Ok, so I have been using Layrite Superhold for a week now and here are my thoughts:

1. Scent: Smells like Play-Doh to me which isn't a bad thing at all, although I find it does interfere with fragarances that I wear.

2. Shine: I think Layrite are spot on here as Layrite gives you a well-groomed silky shine without making your hair look greasy.

3. Hold: Awesome. Makes your hair do whatever you want it to do. Works very well on my side-parted hairstyle.

4. Consistency on hair: This is where the pomade loses points in my opinion as it dries hard. This may be because my hair is slightly damp when I use Layrite in which case I will just have to deal with it as I hate stlying my hair when it's dry...

All in all, it's great pomade and I would recommend it for anyone looking to try pomade for the first time, especially as it washes out fully and with ease. In fact, if it wasn't for the gel like hard finish I would say this pomade is perfect!

I am kind of fascinated by pomades now and I would love to try a can of Murray's next but I'm kind of put off by the reports that it will destroy linen and never wash out! lol!

I still welcome tips from you guys so please contune posting. It's so nice to see pomade making a big come-back as it really is a no nonsense effective product.

Tip-of-the-day: make sure you have a barber or stylest (whatever you use) to show you the proper way to apply pomade. Made all the difference for me.

Oh, and + 1 for American Crew.
