Family Pens

I've mentioned this around here before, but a recent thread made me curious about the family fountain pen collections of others. I have three Parker 51s. All are from my father's side of the family, and all are engraved. The 51s were my grandparents' (both are gray... grandmother's has a gold filled cap) and great-grandfather's (black).

I also have my great-grandmother's Vac, my Dad's Sheaffer Snorkel/pencil set, and my aunt's (Dad's sister) Sheaffer touchdown filler (Craftsman?). Those are engraved, as well. I'm close to my dad and aunt. I talk to my dad on the phone often, and I exchange letters with my aunt. I was also close to my grandmother, but I never knew her husband or my dad's grandparents.

I feel very fortunate to be the caretaker of this little family collection. I also feel like I need to have a pen engraved with my name, just to add my pen to the group. So far, I have only had my great-grandparents' pens restored, but I want to eventually get all of them working.

All those vintage pens were workhorses, and I doubt any of their owners had a collection of pens. I'm probably the first in my family to develop the fountain pen AD bug. That said, my dad has a few modern fountain pens that I gave him. He uses them periodically, even though he's a lefty. I just need to give him a bottle of Quink. I think he'd use fountain pens more often if he didn't risk running his hand through wet ink.

So does anyone else have fountain pens that belonged to family members?

I have a Sheaffer Sovereign that was my grandmother's. It has her name on it. She was the bookkeeper for the power company and it has a superfine super stiff nib on it. Writes pretty nice. I need to get it resacced- again... grrr.

My other grandmother graded her students tests with a red pencil... Grandfather was a superintendant of the local school but he didn't have anything fancy. Other grandfather was a machinist and carpenter so he always used a pencil.

I like your idea about getting your name engraved on a pen but I will wait until I get a younger generation enabled. :)

I have a Merlin 33 that belonged to my Grandfather (inexpensive German button filler), and an Osmia school pen that belonged to my mom. The Merlin does not have a sac currently, for fear of discoloration of the plastic. The Osmia is a piston filler, in fully working condition.

That's exactly what's kept me from becoming interested in spending money on an engraving.

Cool pens guys!

I've got my Dads Parker 75 set.
FP, BP, pencil. The sterling silver ones.
He used it at work for a long time.

No pens here as I come from a long line of pencil-wielding construction workers.

Might be a DE or two in hide, and a bunch of vintage OS items, though.

My dad has a parker duofold set that he uses daily. He said its mine when the day comes. I'm hoping it's a long wait away

My dad passed my grandfather's engraved "51" to me and I'm fortunate to have several nice pens inherited from my mother, including a Montblanc 146, a Cisele Parker 75, some Esties, and Sheaffers. She and my brother got me into my love of fountain pens so even without having the pens I was given something very special.

I wish! The closest I get to this is my mother (after she saw my FP obsession) lamenting that she should have kept her Sheaffer FP and Peacock Blue ink from grade school. So I will live vicariously through this thread...

I have my mothers Mont Blanc Slimline. It was bought for her as a present and came as a set with a Ball Point. She loves the ball point but never uses the Fountain pen - hence the early inherit.

My first FP was/is my wife's grandfather's Sheaffer Imperial 829/827/727 (who knows?? :p) that he received for 10yrs of service in 1978. I keep that one at home and only use it for important things. I want to make sure I can pass it on to my kids or grandkids. My wife's grandfather is still looking for his parents and his grandparents pens which he had at one time. He's not sure though if they survived WWII or his move from Scotland to Canada back in the '50s. Other than that, I also have his Rolls Razor (Imperial) with a spare blade. Everything else I have I've bought or traded for.

Cheers,

M.

From my fathers side of the family I have my ggf engraved shafer, my gf and gm shaffer and paker duofold vacuumatics and my dad's 51. I use several Parker 75's.

Nothing unfortunately. My younger brother and I both remember seeing a fountain pen in the house from dad, or his father but we've been unable to find it since he died. I'm likely going back home for Christmas so I'll be doing my best CSI imitation looking for it.

Not a FP, but my Dad gave me his father's (my grandfather's) Cross gold retirement pen. I just received my maternal great-grandfather's Wade and Butcher straight.
