Fallkniven D4 diamond whetstone?

Having mentioned to friends and family that I'm starting to move into straights, in addition to a few :scared: looks I also got offered a (new and unused) Fallkniven D4 diamond whetstone.

Would this be of any use to me when I start honing? Apparently it's 25 micron covered with TAN (titanium-alumina-nitrid). If I use it, would it be suitable for putting a bevel on a new blade? Or would it be an alternative to a barber hone?

After getting the whetstone and doing some more research, I'm pretty sure it's not going to work for honing!

It's equivalent to a 800 grit stone but it's a tiny surface area (about 1"x3") and VERY thin. I'll just keep it for if I ever need to sharpen a knife :001_smile

I can´t believe no one here warned you! I only come here occassionally,
but someone should have told you...

maybe you will find use for this thing as a slurry stone.
Producing a slurry is somewhat an advanced technique,
but maybe sometime you will come to the point you want to try it.

Apparently you are a total newbie. So here are some tips:

first, try to find someone that will teach you the basics in person.
Theres much to explain. Second: read. A lot. Try this first: http://straightrazorplace.com/srpwiki/index.php/Straight_Razor_Place_Wiki

Lots of basic informations (remember, many ways lead to a sharp razor)

Third: get a razor from a member here. Talk to people and feel free to ask questions. Make sure your first razor is sharpened professionally.
A new razor may not be sharpened properly.

Fourth: don´t learn sharpening on the razor you use. Learn it on an additional razor, so you can compare your work to the proper razor.

Fifth: you need a setup of hones, if you try to sharpen a razor.
For occassional touch ups, a barber hone or another fine hone like a Superstone 12k will do the job, you will only have to find the right angle (or a bit higher angle)

if you want to resharpen it, you may need a 1k, a 3-6k and a finishing stone
like a barber, or an 8.000. Many use the Norton 4k/8k, wich is said to be able to resharpen a razor that is in good condition and finish it.
A coticule is able to do the same.
You might want to consider getting or building a felt strop with ~0.5µm diamond
