Face or bowl lathering Nancy Boy

I have been using nancy boy for quite a while now and for the most part, I love it. I have had better luck just rubbing the cream on my face with my hands, rather than using a brush.

I love to use a brush, and was hoping I could get some help with overall water volume used (rough estimate of amount in brush and on face or in bowl) as well as the amount of cream used. Their website says to use a walnut sized dollop, but that seems like it would allow 20 shaves per tub, if your making two passes.

Thanks for the help everyone!

I like to just use my hands, they alway tell you to use to much. i use a brush when i have more time maybe on saturday. KMF or cremo cream.

I treat it just like TOBS. I load a damp brush in the tub, then build the lather in a bowl or on my face, adding water as needed.

With Nancy Boy I really think that a brush doesn't improve the working of the cream. Just massage enough on your wet face to create a thin layer then shave away. Spread out the remaining cream left on your face for successive passes.

I face lather all my creams; Nancy Boy responds well to my technique. I just take a large almond-sized dollop, put it in a moistened brush, and work the lather on my moistened face. I find with all my creams, circular strokes help build the lather; with very stiff brushes, or very finnicky creams, a pumping motion can help, but I usually don't need to resort to that.

I don't know if anyone else has this problem, but when I use NB with a brush (either bowl or face-lathering), I need more cream than others. Regardless, I love the cream

I've lathered in a bowl and on my face. Works really well in a bowl with my Rooney 3/1 in super. I use a bit more than some other creams and add a bit less water. Lathers like crazy though and it's awesome lather at that!

My experience matches others. With a brush, usually in a bowel, I use a bit mroe NB than other creams and a bit less water, but the lather is excellent and I love the product. I think I use a piece about the size of an almond. Suggesting using a walnut sized dollop seems absurd!

I have never tried just using my hands, but I know it was supposed designed for that.

First use of NB this morning. Taking the general advice on this forum to heart, I loaded my brush with more cream than I normally would. A little too much it would seem, as my brush just exploded with lather and kept on giving through several passes. This cream is incredible, the scent, the consistency of the lather, the moisturizing. Will be hard to top this...

I have no problem making amazing lather with Nancy Boy. It is definitely one of my all-time favorites, along with CF and Trumper.

from the Nancy Boy web site. A brush is not required
USAGE INSTRUCTIONS: Just scoop out a small amount with your fingers, a dollop about the size of a walnut, and spread it on your beard (which you've prepared by splashing some hot water on it or soaking it with a hot towel--also, you want to leave your beard area very moist before applying the cream). A little bit of cream goes a long way, so make sure to massage the cream in with your fingers, spreading it around as you go. The cream won't radically build up in volume like a gel, but it will lather up a bit and spread. Add cream (if necessary) to cover your beard, then shave, using lots of hot water to clear the razor as you go. When you're done, you should notice a difference in how your skin feels--smooth, soft and without irritation.

I like Nancy Boy a lot. I face lather with it--sometimes like HoratioCaine says, sometimes just rubbing it into my beard and then lathering with my damp brush. I find that I need a tad more than I'd normally use with other creams, but not a whole walnut's worth. Very nice.

Thanks everyone. I have tried using more cream and less water and the results have been terrific. I really appreciate all your help.
Don't think my Proraso will be getting much use now!

I received a nice travel size cream of their signature scent for traveling and have found that it lathers really well when face lathering. Like everyone else has mentioned it does seem to take more than any of the other creams I use, but it is well worth it!

It may not be required, but I think most people who have used it with a brush would indicate it's performance is superior with a brush.

KMF also makes no mention of using a brush, but lathers wonderfully with one.

C.O. Bigelow says to lather in hand, or use a brush. Clearly the results are superior when a brush is used.

All soft creams can be used without a brush, but with most of them, their full potential is only realized when used with a brush. I believe this applies to Nancy Boy as well, although the guys who make it might not agree. But neither one of them are brush shavers, so I don't take their advice into account too much. I just like their products.

I've tried Nancy Boy with and without a brush. My personal experience has been that I get superior results and use less product when I use a brush. I'm a face latherer, and I usually just lightly swirl the brush around the tub 2 or 3 times to load it. I don't know how to describe how much water is in the brush, I shake out most of it, but it is still fairly wet when I load it.
