Face lathering with cream

So far I have only ever bowl lathered, except for when I have used MWF.

I was wondering if people have had good success face lathering with creams (not soaps).

Have tried it and have had mixed success. Definitely quicker than bowl lathering, but seem harder to control the quality of the lather.

Currently I dab a bit of cream on both cheeks and my neck and go from there.

Any tips / suggestions

I do it all the time, but maily with creams like QCS and CF, which are a very hard cream or could even be considered a soft soap.

When I use a true "cream" like AOS cream, i bowl lather it.

I do it. Just put a snurdle of cream on your brush and go to town. You can also smear the cream on your face first and then use the brush to lather it.

I use cream 90% of the time and almost always face lather it. There's some really good creams available and not all are expensive.

The easiest way to get a consistent amount of cream is to start with the desired amount cream in your bowl , hit it for only two or three swirls to break it down a bit, use your brush to get every bit of the broken down cream/lather out of the bowl and then you can face lather to your hearts content. I think face lathering has the added value of feeling and seeing the lather on your face to judge when you have a good lather rather than looking at it in the bowl.

I rub some into my face and neck and then add a small dab to the top of the brush for "luck." I dip the tips of the bristles in water as needed.

Until I came to this forum I exclusively face lathered creams. Mostly Proraso, Florena, Nivea and Real Shaving Company. Some are easier than others to spread across your face before grabbing the brush, but regardless of how well it spreads, it will lather up fine. Infotech's suggestion is interesting, and I may give that a try just for kicks.

I always face lather creams, but I don't care for the hard creams/soft soaps. I prefer the softer creams (like T&H/Salter/Simpsons) where I can just dip the tips of the brush or use a dip with slight twist. If I happen to need more during the shave, I just do another quick dip in the cream.

I think this is a bit like when young poeple (i'm 50) do things that amaze and seem impossible, because no one told them it couldn't be done so they figured out a way and did it... life is full of these examples..

I face lather with creams probaly 75% of the time, I didn't know there was any potential problem or taboo with this. I've alway soak my brush while in the shower, then squeezed out most of the excess water put a dolop of cream on the brush, wet my face and go to town. No problems... I usually need to dip the brush in some water for the third pass but always have enough lather to finish up. Now the lather is not big and creamy like a bowl lather but still more than fine when using a good cream.... I do like the idea of spreading the cream on my face and brushing it into a lather... seems similar to using a stick and should work real good.

You ask what creams am I using?... CO Biggelow, Musgo Real, AOS Sandalwood, T&H Trafalgar, KMF Mint and Godrej Lime creams. I like the tubes versus the tubs as I travel a lot and they are easy to pack and provide good variety though not as economical as a tub.

If the cream is in a tube I will squeeze it into a lidded container so that the cream will be easier to get on the tips. Functions just like a TOBS cream.

That's all I ever do now. Just a dab of cream into the very wet brush or directly onto my checks and neck and lather directly on the skin. Very fast and pleasant. (Why lather the bowl at all when you can enjoy a bit of face massage at the same time you are working up a lather?)

If the lather is too dry, dip the tip of the brush in water. If the lather is too wet, add a bit more cream.
