face lathering brush

Hey guys, iam New to the forum but have been shaving with a brush & de razor since I started shaving(67 come January). Over the years I have acquired many brushes but they all would be considered floppy. I recently purchased a chubby 3 from Rudy vey in a 30mm knot & stiff backbone. I find after all these years I like the stiff backbone. Could you give me some recommendations on some good brushes with a smaller knot for the face lathering. Rudys brush is great, I think I went to large on the knot, overkill maybe. Thanks in advance. Grayson

Boars: Any of the Semogues
Badgers: most 2-bands with 50mm knots or less.
Horse: most of the Vie-Long brushes.
Good luck.

You already know Rudy Vey. Why not contact him and ask him to make you a brush? He is a wonderful craftsman and will gladly discuss your needs in order to find the perfect brush for you.

Rooney heritage 2 bands...
Simpson 2 band
Thäter 2 band...
Suggest knot sizes between 22-26mm and loft between 48 and 52 mm depending on knot..,

When you like a stiff brush and prefer face-lathering you should try at least one boar! Once broken in they are perfect for this and really worth a try. My prefered size would be a 45-50 mm loft in a 20-24mm knot. At 55mm loft they easily get too big and loose a lot of their backbone too.

All the above are great suggestions I'll add the Semogue SOC,2 band.Great face lathering brush and it wont break the bank either.

How small do you consider small?

I find that the Simpsons Case (19mm knot) and Duke 1 (also 19mn knot) are very solid face lathering brushes with small knots. If 19mm seems "too" small the Duke 2 is my favorite face lathering brush and it has a 21mm knot

Thanks guys, the gentleman who suggested a boar, what model & what brand please? I have never used a boar,I guess I should try one before I die. When I got the large chubby from Rudy, he suggested the two band which I had not heard of since the last time I purchased a brush was in the early 90s & I have always used silvertip. Correct if iam wrong but i assume two band is the way to go with what iam wanting. Thanks.grayson

It is difficult to suggest a hair grade because they vary so much from one manufacturer to the next. I can imagine that brushes in Best, Finest and Super would all be candidates for you. More important, I believe, is the size of the knot and the loft of the brush.

Semogue 620, 1800, or 1305 all work great face lathering.

You have a lot of options and Semogue is one of them but apart from the 620 they are too big for my taste. I would rather go for the 1520 or 1438 (same knot, different handle).

For a first boar I would not go for a Semogue btw but for an Omega as I find them easier to like and faster broken in. My suggestion would be the 40033 as sold here. It is not perfect either, Omega tends to ruin a great knot with cheap plastic handles, but I am sure that if you like it Rudy Vey has a great solution for this. Certainly worth a try for the little change they are charging and one of the nicest boar knots I encountered.

Yep those are the the three big names there. There are some less expensive options including reknotting any handles you have that you don't care for the hair in them or are past their prime.
