Any of you gentlemen shave exclusively with old restored safety razors? Ever since I got my 1950 Super speed I don't find my DE89 as appealing. I'm also looking for a new open comb or a red tip.
Yes. In my opinion, there are TONS of great razors readily available in the world. No reason for me to buy a new one when there are so many just sitting unused.
I think i have four modern razors, a Muhle R41, a black wilkinson sword, a merker 39c and a platic japanese razor (not feather). I use my (around 31) vintages more.
I have more older than new. My favorites in DE are the red tip and the krona but I still rotate the others I own. In SE my favorites are my Eversharp injector and my 1912 GEM. I have the Merkur Vision and the 1906. They are both fine razors but I like my red tip more than either.
All I've used are vintage Gillettes up to now. I've tried adjustables, TTO's, 3 pieces and have a few more on the way including an open comb Bostonian...RAD hit me quick! I was recently PIF'ed a new Merkur slant but I haven't used it yet. So far I think it's pretty hard to beat the fat handled Tech and the slim head Super Speed, IMO.
I had a Parker, but, gave it away. Now, all I have are vintage Gillettes. I'm using a 1940's Super Speed this week. Well, that's not entrirely correct. I have a Schick Krona, a vintage Merkur OC and a Federal Tool Co. stainless OC, but, no modern razors.
Vintage gold Merkur Progress
Gillette New Long Comb
Vintage Merkur slant
My Progress is pretty much a daily driver and I only use the other two for a change of pace. Not sure if the Progress counts as it is nearly identical to the new one. However mine is gold, which has not been produced in a while, has a Bakelite knob and is finished a bit finer than the modern ones (more polished surfaces). My Gillette New LC is not pretty, but what a shaver! The older slant is also very nice, but the modern 37C I tried shaves the same. The vintage slant has a much better handle grip. My EJ DE89 Barley Chrome is collecting dust. I will use it now and then, but it has not happened in a while, so I guess without even realizing it I have become an exclusive vintage user.
I can't say I use no modern razors, I have a Fatip, a DLC Weber, and a 2011 R41. But I will say that 99% of my shaves are with vintage razors. And I only need one or two more, maybe 3, no wait, 4, well, 5.............
I have two Techs and a Merkur Progress. If anything ever happened to my Progress, I'd probably just use my Techs from then on. One of them is close to 70-years old and looks almost new. Super Speeds and I never got along well. Well the Red Tip was pretty good. I should get another one of those.
I only own one modern DE (Lord L6). I think I've used it a handful of times. It's just hard to beat a vintage Gillette, especially a Slim. They're great for those of us who enjoy a mild shave.
