What's new

Everyone safe?

Just checking in on my fellow B&B east coasters! Is everyone ok post-storm? We managed to keep power and water in my part of Brooklyn, so I'm counting my blessings! Hope everyone else is safe and dry!

Hurricane Irene was much worse for Connecticut than Sandy for many reasons ; our main utility company was unprepared, there were many more trees and branches down & consequently more power outages and Irene impacted the entire state fairly evenly whereas Sandy impacted coastal CT much more than inland.

For us personally we feel thankful also - again - since we have a gas fired water heater, we had hot water for both storms but lost electrical power , heat & cooking for about a day with Irene compared to no power loss with Sandy .

Had a neighbor's tree Down and a smashed fence, but the house is ok. Still no power, might take a week to get it back. In my car using on the driveway right now, charging the phones. Monmouth county, NJ

we lucked out here in Luzerne county PA (Wilkes-Barre area) several friend w/o power, and I lost mine several times last night but always came back.

looks like this area dodged a bullet, for sure, and my thoughts and prayers go out to those less fortunate.

Union Co NJ....No power for a week...otherwise, made it through

BrianW, I can stop with some LV! Don't Panic!!

I'm OK, but Hoboken is devastated. It is really very sad to see how badly Sandy hit that town.

The image is of the PATH station in Hoboken taking on water. Most of the town is underwater, power is out, and the historic Lackawanna Terminal was under 5 feet of water.

Made it through, tree came down in front, power went out at 9:30 last night and came back on this morning. Traffic lights out here and there. We were lucky in my neighborhood but others not so much.

Just got power back in my house. Stupid storm made me skip shaving for the first time since I started DE shaving. Twice! Got a little tired of the cold-water method. Tomorrow I'm going back to my routine of microwaving the mug full of water to soak the brush before I shower.

Has anyone heard from Jim?

Lou:

I sent Jim an e-mail asking if he was OK. Here is his response:

"Don, I am fine and besides a few members in the dark, I know of no one who has been grievously affected yet, I am sure we will at some point. Thanks so much for the PM!
Jim"

Hang in there folks.

Don

I'm fine where I'm located, but my fiancé and some cousins' areas were hard hit but thankfully no one was hurt

I'm in Middlesex county and we were fortunate that we only lost power for a few hours -- many of our friends and neigbors still are without. No cable, phone or internet at home since Tuesday but that's minor compared to everything else going on. We lost two huge oak trees in our backyard. Unfortunately one of the clipped my neighbor's house.

Finally got power back tonight after 193 hours, but I had no damage so I ain't complaining. The generator I bought after Irene came in handy.

I'm in Southampton, NJ on the edge of the Pine Barrens. I lost a gable-vent in my attic, otherwise no damage to my house, but there were trees knocked down a few streets over. One neighbor had a tree fall on and through his roof, another had his car crushed.

I lost power twice in the last 7 days for a total of less than 5 minutes. Others in nearby towns have been out for days.

A friend of mine reports that his aunt and uncle were found dead last week a couple of miles from here. The facts aren't in, but he suspects that they succumbed to Carbon Monoxide poisoning using a small gas heater to keep warm when their power went out.

All in all, we made out quite well. The local handyman are staying quite busy, but for the most part, its all minor repairs. Nobody in this development was evacuated, nor did anybody suffer any catastrophic losses.

But now, we're hunkering down for that Nor'Easter that's headed this way.

Eight days plus, without power. Had to leave the house last Friday when it got too cold; power came back on last night at 7PM. There are still parts of my neighborhood without power (lower Westchester County, NY) and now it's snowing like mad. Our local power company (Con Ed) is incapable of communication and has pushed everyone to the breaking point. Compared to places like Breezy Point we had it easy, but it still sucks. The out of state crews that are doing the work are great. My heart goes out to those that are now homeless; bad times around here.

let's hope this Nor'easter isn't as bad as they are predicting... especially for those who are without power, shelter and family/friends.
