What's new

Every new razor is better than the current ones

Am I the only one, or does each new razor work better than the ones already owned? I am afraid this may be the start of RAD!

I started with a "Shaving Factory DE". It was alright but not very good.

I found a Gillette blue tip in a local antique store. It worked great.

I bought a Feather Popular. It worked great, a little better than the blue tip.

I bought a Gillette red tip. It works AMAZING. Hands down the best of my "collection".

So, I have two questions:

1. Anyone else have this same phenomenon?

2. For the enablers; what razor should I try next?

Something like that phenomenon! (I think the best shave I ever got from a DE was from a razor I bought for someone else and used once before passing it on. That was a flare-tip SuperSpeed. My "old type" open comb is a cool razor, but not "better" than what came before it. So there have been a few ups and downs).

Try a vintage SuperSpeed. And try a vintage Slim (adjustable).
I just tried my first SE recently. That was... different.
There are plenty more if you really just want RAD encouragement!

No one is ever the only one no matter what the topic. I've found the DE that I'm happy with but that doesn't mean that there aren't others in the same boat as you.

Don't overlook that it might be your skill that's improving as well. Try revisiting prior razors.

Gillette NEW long comb and a NEW short comb. And then a Slim. And after that maybe a Fatboy. And then an old style. And maybe a New Standard in silver. And a Goodwill.

The Gillette RedTip IS an awesome razor. I used one for years (neglecting my other razors). Recently I bought a Merkur 34cHD and absolutely love it. But, I have gone back and re-used my older Gillette SS's with the new blades I acquired (ASTRA SP and Gillette Blacks). Got excellent shaves with them but mostly use he Merkur because of the heft and balance. Its all a matter of personal taste. Retry your other razors and see how they work now. If you feel you need to upgrade, by all means do it. RAD is a wonderful thing <G>. :biggrin1:

Maybe I have a problem...

Sorry, but for a second there I thought that you were a P&G Marketing guy......

Embrace your RAD- if you buy them on the B/S/T and they don't appeal, it costs little more than shipping to sell them again.

I think what's been happening is, you've been moving up in terms of aggressiveness. My 38c is more aggressive than my tech and despite the praise the tech gets around here, I prefer my Mercur

Exactly what I was thinking.

Not me, I've bought quite a few razors that were terrible for me in spite of the hope that I would really like them. Injectors and Gillette OC's come to mind. Sometimes new razors are better and sometimes they're worse.

Along with improved technique, I think many of us are more focused when we try a new Razor or Blade for the first time. Becoming more familiar with equipment or procedures we perform daily makes us complacent and nonchalant and increases the probability for poor results.

NO! NO! NOT LISTENING! LALALALALALALALALALA!! :whistling::whistling:

I'm inclined to agree with the others who have talked about improving skill. I thought the same when I moved from the 38C to a Slim Adjustable (a fantastic razor BTW), and from the Slim to the FatBoy (another great razor). My shaves still get progressively better by increments, so I am sure it is a matter of improving skill. I still want to go back to that 38C, and try the 34C!

I have a FaTip, too. I actually don't use it much, but I got one...

I was lukewarm for the first couple of months. Then I paired it with the Weber Bulldog handle and, whammo, it became my favorite razor! Works beautifully with the new Weber Classic handle as well.

As much as I enjoy all of my acquisitions my first razor, an unknown Parker model, is still my favorite.

Try an SE.
