Ever Ready 1912 - second attempt

I had another go with this razor yesterday with a new GEM coated stainless blade and the shave was much better than my first try. I experimented a lot with the angle and found that holding the razor flat didn't cut very much so I gradually increased the angle to find out where the sweet spot was. After I did so, I got a good shave, although it still feels a little bit unwieldy in my hand.

I like this razor and when I have used a DE for a while longer, I look forward to familiarising myself with it. I certainly see what people mean by the sound it makes while you are shaving with it :thumbup1:

I snagged one (OK two) of these, so as soon as I find a blade sampler I'm keen to try it out. One thing I'm not too keen on is ponying up for 100 blades before I know whether the SE is for me.

Glad to hear the success story though!

I found a seller in America selling the GEM Blue Star blades. The price was okay thanks to the exchange rate. I found a site in England that sells the PTFE coated GEM stainless blades in sets of ten. There should be plenty of others on-line as well. Otherwise, I'm sure there will be people willing to do trades.

Thanks; I'll keep my eyes out. I have to do some more reading too, in order to figure out which blades I should be considering. I don't want to end up with duds!

The coated GEM stainless ones seem to be the most highly regarded. I think these are the ones people refer to as the 'Pella' blades, being the ones best suited to shaving that he sells.

I haven't tried the carbon steel ones yet. They should hold an edge for much longer but will need to be thoroughly dried after use, or dipped in alcohol.

My grandfather used to use an Ever Ready razor and when he joined the army in the 1940s, he was issued with another. He told me that blades (carbon steel in those days) were very difficult to get hold of so he made a strop out of an old leather belt and used to dry and strop the blade after each use. He could get about four month's usage out of a blade that way. Carbon steel will hold an edge much better than stainless steel, if you can prevent rust.

I might try it myself :001_smile

Four months is a mammoth effort! I wonder how good it was towards the end of that time though.

I think I'll be changing blades a little more often!

I was going to say to go by Walgreens and pick up a pack of Gems, but it appears there are no Walgreen stores in Oz.

Send me a mailing address and I'll PIF you a few coated Gem blades...if I'm reading the postage right of US$5.64.

Hi,

I use an Ever-Ready 1912 type SE with GEM PTFE coated blades, and it is an absolutely awesome shaver :)

Have fun !

Best regards

Russ

SE razors a very good. They give me closer shaves with fewer passes, and most of the time the blades last far longer than any DE. The angle and all is a little different, and each style and model of SE is a little different from the others, but once you get the hang of it, you will never look at a DE the same way.

I can't get more than one shave out of the GEM coated stainless steel blades. Perhaps the ones I have bought are a different grade to the ones that other people are enthusiastic about.

I'm going to try the GEM Blue Star carbon steel blades next and see how long they last me.

I have only tried the PAL, which rusted entirely too fast for me, and the Ted Pella, which were PIFd to me. I couldn't get the TP blades to rust, so that is good, and they are fairly smooth.

I have intentions on trying the GEM Blue Star and the Treet blades, but they are mysteriously disappearing around here. I finally found 2 drug stores that carried them, but when I went back to by them this weekend, they were gone. Not even a spot on the shelf.

Just tried my first shave with a 1912 over the weekend--not only my first SE but my first open comb as well. I haven't shaved so carefully in months and only went two passes, but the results were very nice. Looking forward to many more shaves (and going ATG!).

With many thanks to simon1, who is PIFing some blades to me, I will soon be joining the ranks of those trying out the 1912. I'm going to take it really gently, but I'm looking forward to it, given the results people seem to be getting.
