Ever modify an old brush / razor stand to fit your stuff?

Found an old brass, or brass colored shave stand with brush and trac type razor at a flea market for $5. Haven't bought it yet, but may. Anyway, its basically just like the Col Conk's and so on that consists of a base, a "pole", a a fork bid enough for razor on one side, and the brush on the other. Now, my plan would be to fit another piece of forked brass that would fit my razor and brush (note that the razor side on this is slotted so narrow, that just filing to fit my fatboy would make it too thin). Do any of you know these types of sets? Does the cap on top screw off so the other parts can be removed, or are they soldered? It was in a taped up bag, so I couldn't tell. The thing I like about this stand is that its very solid and heavy, so its most likely not going to rust and have problems like some report with the new stuff.
