Europe Shopping List

Heading to EU for a few weeks for a conference and some vacation afterwards. Thought I'd put a shopping list together for things to look out for, wanted to get some suggestions. Specific stores in the cities would be helpful, although I can check the wiki (http://wiki.badgerandblade.com/index.php/Shopping_Links_-_By_Vendor) if it is up to date.

Going to:

-Vienna, Austria
-Salzburg, Austria
-Munich, Germany
-Prague, Czech Republic
-Amsterdam, Netherlands
-Rotterdam, Netherlands (maybe)
-Ghent, Belgium (maybe)
-Antwerp, Belgium (maybe)
-Bruges, Belgium
-Brussels, Belgium

The list I was thinking was:

For sure:
-Speick
-Tabac shaving sticks & soap dish
-Palmolive shaving stick (Gut 2.2)
-Irish Moos shaving stick

Maybe:
-Aigner
-Pino Silvestre
-Knize Ten *Austrian
-Gold-Dachs Shaving Soap (rare) - Munich

Will also look for some Gillette Blue Blades, take a look at a Merkur HD if its not too much, and some Merkur blades.

If I do get to Antwerp, can go to Santa Maria Novella" shop, at the "Augustijnenstraat 39"

Any other big ones I missed? Any really good places to go that aren't a crazy tourist rip off?

Thanks,
BM

Look, I'm kind of insane, but if I was heading to Europe, I would find the Antique Stores or flea markets. They must have them there. Pick up some cheap English Gillette's! At least I would in my fantasy world. :001_smile

How about picking up some Monsavon soap?

I've read comments from Euro members here that there's a real dearth of vintage razors compared to what we can get here. Not sure how true that is, just an impression I've got. They get fantastic cheap soaps and creams, we get drugstore aftershaves and plentiful antique shop razors.

That's about right.

Another fantasy crushed.

Depending on how often you can go to Europe, if not often, I would stock up on the ones you just can't get in the States, like Knize Ten. At least I've heard it's difficult to find?

What are the issues with bringing alcohol containing products on planes (I assume checked baggage) and then through customs check points? I can imagine a couple of bottles aren't a big deal, but more then a few?

Try and get some Tesco blades. Have a safe trip.

Alt-Innsbruck if you can find it in Austria. Go to the Knize store in Vienna and check out all the Knize products (the other ones such as Sec and Forest are much harder to get in the US). In Belgium, look for Bleue Extra blades (the new Russian made ones-very very good)......This thread talks about Antwerp and Belgium.....

The Palmolive sticks (tallow formula) you will find everywhere and anywhere in Europe, they are dirt cheap, about 50 pence which is less than a dollar. Fill your bags with them.Don't know why i quoted haiti222's post it must have been a slip of the keyboard, Sorry.

BTW, if you come to the UK on your travels call in to a Superdrug store and you will get Ingrams cream for £1.69 (an excellent cream IMHO) Boots the chemist own brand cream and soap is good stuff and very cheap, their cologne cream is 89 pence, they also stock Tabac AS and Old Spice.

Might I suggest that you try the Palmolive Cream rather than the soap, it is a far better product. Also, try for some Cyril R Salter Essential Lime cream, truly wonderful stuff.

To kind of piggyback on the suggestion to get some palmolive cream.....I bought some Irisch Moss Cream and Deo Spray....Also, Williams cream is probably available in Belgium and/or the Netherlands......Good Stuff that is made in the Netherlands, I believe.....Had fun checking out the drugstore colognes as well.....There were tons of Naomi Campbell for the ladies (among others). There were a bunch of different Playboy colognes (got one for the teenage son) and lots of unusual adidas and puma colognes (such as Jamaica 2)....for both sexes...

That's why I like doing business with American members on the BST forum. The exchange rate helps...

For the OP: I'd also look out for Arko sticks. They can sometimes be found outside of Turkey.

I would also include Nivea shaving cream or Florena(I believe it´s the same).

+1 on both counts. Palmolive, Williams and Nivea, the "holy trinity" of cheap European shaving creams .

Don't waste your money on Merkur blades. They are simply awful. I was reminded of this last weekend when I made a quick trip to Venice with hand luggage only. Merkurs were the only blades that I could find there, and they gave me a dreadful shave (I normally use Feathers).

I would be very surprise if you find anything of DE interest in the lovely city of Prague. If you can take your mind off shaving, don't forget to have lunch or dinner at the world's most beautiful restaurant, the Francouzka (in the Obecni Dom):
