ESPN 30 for 30

Any followers of the 30 for 30 series/documentaries of ESPN? Well, the new season starts tonight with "Broke" which is about how a lot of pro athletes go broke after making millions of dollars just a few years after retiring. I think this one will be pretty good as it will offer a glimpse, for people like me (who think some of these athletes are financial idiots,) into the reasons they go broke which may not be solely irresponsibility.

Love the series. I think one of them will be Andre Rison...and the reason would be "Left-Eye" burning his "crib" to the ground, I imagine. Not to make fun...but who the hell burns down your house in an argument?!?! I think she may have needed some help.

I too think most athletes are financial idiots, but there is a perfectly good explanation for it. Far too many of them don't have people surrounding them that have their true best interests in mind. Just my $.02.

I love this series.

Love 30 for 30

Broke was very interesting to watch. So many of those guys declared bankruptcy

Yeah, it was an ok one, I think they could've shortened it to one hour though, as it dragged on because it was mostly people talking about their experience while sitting down, it was just too linear to be an hour and a half long.

I said it was ok because it didnt really reveal anything we didnt already, i.e. uneducated kid from the hood gets to go to college because he can play some ball and gets shellshocked at the amount of money thrown at him when he goes pro.

I agree, could have spent more time on the subject of them being taken advantage of; agents, financial "advisors," and "investment" opportunities. It hit on it for about 15 minutes but only on the personal experiences. Otherwise, this was really an average episode of mainly Andre Rison talking about how he lived paycheck to paycheck spending $15-20 grand a week in clubs and dinner parties.

Had not watched it yet but heard it was pretty good. 30 for 30 has had some great episodes. Watching "The Two Escobars" darn near brought me to tears

^Exactly how I feel about this one.

"The two Escobars" has to be one of my top three 30 for 30 docs. I dont say number 1 because there's so many good ones and then some I cant remember, but off the top of my head I know I loved "Winning time," "The U," "Without bias" and the one with Allen Iverson, I forgot its name.

Two of the most disappointing ones were the one of how fantasy baseball started and the one Ice Cube directed about the Raiders. The latter going straight to the garbage bin iirc. Oh I just remembered the "Fab Five" (Webber, Juwan Howard and Jalen Rose) that was pretty entertaining too. The "The best that never was" (Marcus Dupree) kinda made me feel bad for the guy.

Forgot about the one about Steve Bartman, the infamous Chicago Cubs fan who single handedly sent the Marlins to their second world series. That 30 for 30 was intense, I felt sorry for that guy.

Bartman didn't cause the errors that followed or them to get blown out in Game 7. It bothers me that he gets all the blame for them losing that series. That was a good show though, sure made me feel bad for him for everything he went through. 99% of the people in the stands probably would have done the same exact thing.

I am watching Broke right now. It's just baffling what some of these guys spend. I hope this or something similar is required watching for rookies in all the major sports.

It was all Bartman's fault.

(obviously I'm kidding)

Watched the Bo Jackson one last night on netflix. What an amazing athlete. Good documentary if you haven't seen that one yet.

Im watching the allen iverson one now.

i find it ridiculous that they compare iversons sentence to the Martin luther king assasination. Saying it was the worst since king was killed.

I've seen a few of these now including the Bartman, Bo Jackson and Broke films. Last night Survive and Advance was on and that was probably the best one yet. They advertised for some 30 for 30 short films, which I think are on ESPN's website. I'll have to check those out, too.
