English Leather, still not right

The first time I tried whatever the current formula is, I considered it so bad smelling, I washed it all off almost as quickly as I splashed it on. It's still not at all close to the original scent, but when cut to about quarter strength with Witch Hazel, it doesn't quite "stink". Too bad, because the period scent was decent.

I agree it's clearly different now. I still like it, but exclusively in cool weather, and with light dosage. I leave the face a little damp when applying it.

Agree Kiwi and it is a damnable shame. Long timers here know of my love for the MEM English Leather. it was my Da's go to scent and smelled better on him than anyone I can remember. The current cologne is kind of similar but the a/s as you note is completely different. And i still cannot figure out why. This stuff is not an impulse purchase. If you are looking for it you know what it is, or was anyway. People overlook it because it is "old" but in its heyday it was a popular as anything put out by Ralph Lauren in the 80's. And the old scent had this sort of honey sweetness without being cloying. Of course you did not want to bathe in it but it unnecessarily gets a bad rap these days based on the newer a/s formula. Interestingly I find the new a/s formula works a treat on my skin. This is highly unusual for an a/s product from a scent family. Most are pure crap as a/s splashes. I had to simply accept it was not dad's EL. It is MUCH drier smelling and very soapy. Oh well, one day I will stumble upon a full bottle of 1960's MEM English Leather complete with wooden box and all the labels. I know I will.

Cheers, Todd

I agree EL ain't what it used to be when my Dad wore it, but I like the Dana version and wear it in the cooler months.
