England Glass Hone Set?

I picked up a mahogany boxed set from our Labs cleanout day. It had inside what appeared to be glass hone blocks, a cloth block with a device that tightens and several bottles of white powder.
Research and Industrial Instruments Company, England was on the outside of the box.
The only info I could find is it some sort of lens polishing outfit.
Anyone here use glass honing blocks? Can they be used for straights?

Probably not. It sounds like you got a lab polishing set for cleaning and removing scuffs from eyepieces on microscopes, camera's and the like. There are glass hones (shaptons) but they are embedded with grit. I know some folks have kicked around the idea of using glass blocks and fine abrasive powders to hone with, but I've not heard of any promising results with it.

In a german shaving forum I read that some are using silica and oil on a glass surface for finishing.

The two glass stones are imbedded with grit, one side rough, the other fine.
Anyway, I appreciate the insight!
