Emir Safety Razor - Karl Engels Solingen - Made in Germany

Hi there,

I want to introduce you a german safety razor which was a find at a flea market here in Hamburg / Northern Germany, where I am living. Even that this razors are really rare and hard to get in Germany, I had to pay only 10 Euro = 12,34 $. The vendor did not really know the value of this razor he was selling.
Both sides of the razor are bar guarded (closed comp) but one side is more aggressive than the other. So you got one aggressive side for WTG and a smoother side for your pass ATG. Underneath of the razors head you can read Karl Engels Solingen but there are no other informations about the date of production. On the handle which is hexagonal, you can see on two opposite sides in a red coloured rhombus the letter E, which stands for Emir, the name of that razor brand. Because of the art deco design the razor could be produced between 1920 and 1940. The shaves are more than superb with this razor. Very smooth but pretty exhaustive. I can use that razor for my daily shave without getting any skin irritations.

Measures:

Width of the head: 4 cm = 1.5748 in
Length of the razor: 8,5 cm = 3,34645 in
Length of the handle: 7,6 cm = 2,99212 in
Weight: 61g = 2.1517117oz

Hope you enjoy it. :001_smile

It kinda looks like it would fill up with lather pretty quickly. Do you find that you have to rinse more often?

In the meantime I have seen that there exists a different thread about that german razor with images and good informations.
http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/202095-A-really-nice-German-razor?highlight=Emir
But with the heading of that thread you don´t expect that it is about the Emir razor. Is it possible to put them together but with the heading of my thread? Would make it much more easier that way to find it if someone is searching for the Emir razor.

Hey guys, thanks a lot for the compliments.

Hi Chet,

I also own the Progress 500 and the construction of the two closed ditches which catch the lather is not the same but similar. I don´t have the feeling that I have to rinse the Emir razor more often as I would do with the Progress. On the other hand and thinking about it, I usually rinse all my DE safety razors every time after using each of both sides for one stroke. Honestly, because of that way I am shaving I cannot answer your question, sorry. :blushing:

Regards, Alexander.

There was a nice one on ebay just a month ago (251093716370). Went for a mere 18 euros. I would have snagged it, but I was going on vacation with no telephone or internet access, plus I have made a vow to stop hoarding razors.

I continue to think that this is one of the best-shaving razors ever. For my face and beard, it beats out every one of the 20-30 Gillette models that I auditioned. YMMV, natch.

Nice Razor, Nice case and presentation. Thanks for sharing )

Thanks a lot for mate.

Nice razor. It looks substantial but doesn't weigh a ton.

Hi and thank you. Indeed, the razor looks heavier as its effective weigth. Its 61g = 2.1517117oz feels really balanced in my hand.

+1

I quite agree. That Emir razor is also one of my best performing razors in my rotation. In any case it is the most straightforward razor to shave myself, which I have ever used so far.

Alexander

No worries. I asked because for some razors, having a solid bottom-plate isn't such a problem (progress is a good example, and I share your observations, there). Yet, for others, it's a big problem. The Neo-Ras comes to mind. If you don't rinse the Neo-Ras frequently, the whole razor just lifts off your face and doesn't cut anything.

Hi Chet,

I own a Neo - Lux slant razor by my own with half white and half black handle and cream white head, which is identical to the Neo - Ras razor. Honestly, till today I was not courageous enough to shave myself with it. :biggrin1: ....It looks so dangerous...:scared:
