emery paper as a hone?

i started out shaving with a straight (except for 1 multi blade thing) but only ever had the straight and a strop so when i needed a hone i decided to try the DE id recently been given, i liked it and have been using it, amongst other DE's ever since, id now like to go back to using my straight but cant currently afford a hone so was wondering if there is any type of emery paper or sand paper (or similar inexpensive easily obtainable product) that i could use instead of a hone...?

Diamond Lapping film .

Just get a nice flat surface like a piece of tile or similar and some lapping film and you're set. I just got some to add to the honing progression and have loved it. I got it from PSIdragon and it was about 5 bucks a sheet with an exorbitant 6 dollar handling charge tacked on .

You could get several grits like 3 micron, 1 micron, and .5 micron and you would be set. I recommend you get the non PSA backed type A stuff like right here. 3x6 sheets, perfectly sized and they work nicely.

+1 on the DLF. We had a group buy a while back and I got a 6"X6" sheet each of 6µm, 3µm, and 1µm diamond film. Also got a couple 8½"X11" sheets of 0.5µm AlO film for the final touch. Works very very well. I use mine on a 3"X6"X¾" glass slab.
