EKS straight razor.

Hello everyone,
I have been trying to find information on a razor I have. On the shank is a diamond with a crown above it, and in the diamond are the letters "EKS." Outside the diamond, to the blade side, is the word "GOLD" and to the handle side, outside the diamond, is the word "KRONE." On the reverse side is "SOLINGEN" and below that, "GERMANY." The scales appear to be bone, and the blade for some reason is somewhat short, coming to about an inch from the wedge. (Maybe the handle has been changed??) The blade is about 2.5" long and appears to be a 6/8, maybe slightly over, like 13/16.

Any information is greatly appreciated.

I am new to B&B, but have been shaving with a straight razor for around 5+ years. I haven't completely conquered the problem spots :mad3:, but can do a pretty good job in a minimum amount of time.

And, STILL, trying to get a good edge. (Norton 220/1K, Norton 4/8K and a SHAPTON 12K) I have worked and worked on trying to get a good edge, but fall short every time. (Have watched numerous videos on youtube; but watching and doing are two different things.)

Anyway,
Glad to be here.....................

Yes! you are correct; the Gold Krone is a great shaver, one of the best I have. I am sure makers came and went and there were, maybe, hundreds of them. And razors turn up that no one has seen or heard much about, which would not be unusual in my case. So, maybe just accept it at shave value and forget it.
Thanks.................

I've got a Shapton 12k and it's a very good stone. Not being able to get a really good edge is quite often the result of not having a correctly set bevel. Off the 1k stone, you should have been comfortably able to shave arm hair. If you couldn't then you're going to struggle to get a properly shave ready razor. EKS is a very good razor so there are no problems with the make.

It sounds like the blade has been shortened. 6/8 razors are usually around 3" long.
EKS in a diamond was the trademark of the Solingen manufacturer Ewald Kron Co. (EKS = Ewald Kron Solingen).
"Krone" was one of their brands.
They were in business from around 1919 to 1928. A lot of their production was for export, particularly to the US, and they did re-branding for others.

Which series is it from? I've only seen a 10k and the 16k - do you know the particle size by any chance?

I can't give you the dimensions off the top of my head but it's from the Shapton Ceramic Pro range. I've got a progression of 1k, 2k, 5k, 8k and 12k. Excellent stones.

Interesting -
I wonder if you have one of the 12k stones that was supposed to be for the Japanese market only - some thought it was the same as the 15k Pro that was for the US market.
There was some buzz on the knife forums about this a long while back - maybe 6 yr ago or so.

I know this is an old thread, but I thought I'd add my 2 cents.......

I have an EKS Gold Krone and it is a great little razor. The blade is 3" and 5/8ths with an ornate spine and gold wash on the blade face, tang and shoulder. It takes and keeps a fantastic edge with a hard steel reminding me of a Dorko or Puma. I finish it on a Rosetta Stone from Alberta and a few strokes on a Zulu Grey Stone for smoothness. I couldn't ask for a better edge.
