EJ DE89L - First impressions

I received an EJ DE89L last night (purchased from qedusa) and thought I'd share my first impressions. There has been a lot of talk and excitement about this razor in the past few months, and I couldn't take the itch anymore. I've been using a Tech with feather blades for the past few months, so I'll use that to compare.

Out of the box
It came in the blue box. Not sure why this has been important to people, but the box was nothing special. My first thought was, "This is big!" Having used a ball end Tech for months, it felt mega-big. The finish is, as many others have stated, quite nice.

The next thing I noticed was that it wasn't as heavy and solid as I had expected. Previous posts had all talked about how solid it was, and how the heft felt. I clicked my fingernail on the handle and heard a "dink" instead of a "dunk". I thought it would've been a solid handle, but it seems to be semi-hollow. I checked the weight (2.5 oz.) and it is only a few more more than the Tech (2.1 oz.). I was surprised. I was worried. "Was there too much hype on this razor? Were my expectations too high? Did I make a mistake?"

The shave
I began the day with a shave, and a bit of trepidation. Loaded up a new feather blade, lathered up the Moos and had at it. Wow! That finish really makes for a smooth stroke. Kinda like a hot knife through butter. My first WTG pass went well, but something was different and I couldn't put my finger on it. I re-lathered and went in for an ATG pass. AH HA! It hits me...there is NO pulling going on! It just slices right through everything like a hot knife through butter.

Pass #3 ATG coming right up! Again, it seems to be slicing through the beard with little effort. No nicks yet, and I don't feel any irritation. After that pass, I go in for the touch ups on the problem spots. The jawline always needs help at this stage, and I end up kind of buffing, and going in all angles with the tech to get this final stubble - and it rarely gets it all. The EJ got the trouble spot touch ups easily, with out many strokes at different angles.

Conclusion
I know that one needs a few shaves with a tool to get a good idea on how it's going to work for them. That's why I titled this "First impressions". However, I think this razor is going to be around for the long haul. The DE89L really does have a nice finish to it. Obviously, this razor is a bit more aggressive than the Tech, which allowed me to get a very DFS with fewer touch-ups, probably giving me less irritation. I'll know for sure in 2 days, as that's when the red spots show up on my sensitive neck if I've gone a step too far. We know that a Tech is a mild shaver, and this was a nice change for me. While the heavens didn't open up and bathe me in golden light, I look forward to more shaves with this razor. Thumbs up for now! :thumbup1:

Congrats on your purchase. Your EJ should provide you with many years of wonderful shaves. I have the Muhle R89 (the sister razor to the EJ), and it's an amazing, and awesome razor in every way.

I think it is the best new DE razor on the market today!! :001_tt1:

yup, the EJ DE89L is a great razor. I've had mine for a few weeks now and am loving it. Between this and my '74 Superspeed I'm experiencing some great shaves that my Mach3 et al could only dream about.

A really high quality razor for comparatively little money :thumbup1:

Sax,
If you prefer a little more weight the EJ Chatsworth metal handles use the same head. I think they price them by the pound though! I think they say weight 3.88gr. The Handle also has a functional shape, as the narrow point is a well balanced place to grip. The sell the Chatsworth metal handles in three variations: Smooth chrome, Lined chrome, and barley textured. The texture is functional with a slippery hand. I have been using the barley version, and really like the way it looks and performs.

Yep, I completely agree with the effortless DE89L shaves with a Feather. That is an excellent combination! I've enjoyed it with the Irisch Moos, as well!

I wasn't fanatical about the DE89L on the first shave, either. I thought it was very good, but it was shaving month after month that really sold it. I've never had better shaves and it is so consistent. I cue up other razors here and there, but always go back to the DE89L. So keep shaving and you'll find yourself very attached.

I am giving some serious thought to a Chatsworth. A bigger, heavier handle might really be terrific with this head. And if it isn't, I'd at least have a backup to a favorite.

Also, you might want to put an Iridium in your DE89L some time. Another great combo and I keep going back and forth whether the Iridium or the Feather is my favorite. I think the clear solution is to order 100 of each.

VERY true. These are so reasonable for what you get.

Hah! I'll keep that in mind if I get some more spare cash. Thanks!

Good info. Thanks! I can't wait until the morning for another go :001_smile

I had looked at the Chatsworths, but i wasn't crazy about the handle style. Now you guys have me thinking. Again. LOL!

Also, I plan on posting an update in a week or two. It'll be interesting to see how a couple of weeks of use will compare to my initial thoughts.

Cheers!

My favourite combo is R89 with a Iridium blade. Spot on. Love it.
I will try today for the first time a Feather blade. Is it really THAT sharp?!
I'm so curious..
BRB

Yes, the Feather blade is really THAT sharp.
And it delivers wonderful, close shaves!:wink2:

Yep..It's official! The Feather is the sharpest blade!
A perfect fit for the R89! I admit it's better than the Super Iridium. I can get 4 really great shaves with a Iridium. I doubt that I can get the same with the Feather.

But the first shave with a Feather was fabulous! The sharpest blade, no doubt about that!

I used the Speick Stick Soap and got a great, slick, cushy lather. Love the scent of Speick! But the Feather blade was the star of today's shave. Love it!

Cheers friends

Agreed! I pair these two w/ Speick soap and had an absolutely first-rate shave. These 3 may be the best combo I've found. Still wish Speick came in a wooden bowl too...

Yes.. My top products so far, that if I let the Feathers out of the picture.
But a great combination for sure! Nice tastes my friend ;)
And yes, too bad Speick doesn't make a bowl version of their soap. A real pity.

I use my 89 about 90% of the time. (I mix my other razors in every once in a while). Like many on this thread, I enjoy the 89 + Feather combo. But I also have quite a bit of success with the Astra.

It really is a great razor. I use it about 65% of the time - I switch between and old Gillette NEW and the EJ. They both are absolutely fantastic shavers, IMHO.
