Edwin Jagger DE89 vs DE89L

I have seen the razor mentioned in different terms. Is there a difference between the two designations? With and without the L? Are they the same head, etc???

Same razor head, only the handles are different. The DE89L has a lined handle which for me is easier to grip when my hands are wet. The DE89 has a smooth unlined handle. EJ makes a great razor, I highly recommend them.

yah, only difference is in the handle. The DE89 is a great shaver, I can only speculate that the DE89L is a great shaver as well!

Thanks. I am excited to order one but everyone seems to be out of stock. I am waiting to start to whole DE experience until I get a new razor (ordered older Gillette SS flare from the bay).

Want to go EJ89 over the Merkur HD but can't seem to get one...killing me!

Is there a difference between the Edwin Jagger and the Muhle version of these razors? The price difference is about $10...

Oh, I dunno, about $10? :tongue_sm

Actually, the heads are identical, but the weight and balance are different. The Muhle also has a proper knurled handle if the lined (or unlined) chrome of the EJ strikes you as too slippery (wet or dry, the 89L's been fine for me).

Thanks for the info - and for letting me know about the umalaut (spelling?). I knew it was there but was lazy.

As for the Muhle, I liked the idea of a textured handle and it looks to be more "hefty" than the EJ handle. I guess one can always get a different screw on handle as well.

Anyone have any experience with the Muhle? I have read lots of good things on the EJ but not too much on the Muhle...

Actually, the Muhle handle is lighter in weight, than the EJ model.

I have the EJ DE89 without the lines and I loved it as my first DE. It's very slick looking and super shiny. I would say, classy yet understated. I've moved on to str8's in the last few days so my EJ isn't getting much love lately but I know I'll keep it forever, it's THAT nice of a razor. Good luck with yours and don't forget to join the The 89'ers Fan Club

So the Muhle handle is lighter but has more grip/traditional style handle.

Are the lengths of the handles the same between the two types (muhle vs EJ)?

If the handle isn't quite what you want, talk to Cooncatbob. He can make you a custom handle. The handle that fits the Jagger and Muhle will also fit Merkurs.

I've read elsewhere in the threads that the '89' head is the same for EJ and Muhle, and that the only difference is the manufacturer distinctiveness in handle; however, I cannot attest to that as being fact.

I do have the EJ 89L and it is one of my favorite razors.

The Muhle handle is longer than the Jagger. The heads are indeed identical. My son has the EJ D89L and I have the Muhle R89. Both are finished extremely well. The chrome is absolutely beautiful.

The Muhle handle, although longer, is hollow, and thus on the light side. It results in the razor being somewhat head-heavy. It is quite easy to adapt to either.

Exactly what he said!
I have both the EJ D89L and the Muhle R89.
I got my EJ first, loved it, so bought the Muhle to store at my mums house for when I have to stay over there (two shave dens! Imagine the possibilities...)
First I preferred my EJ, then the Muhle, at the moment I favour my EJ again, but they really are almost identical, and you can't go wrong with either one of them.

Yay! a EJ 89 fanclub! Ad me as a fan,I love this razor. I have the regular one, without the lines.

I use the DE89 and DE86 (black handle) regularly. No problems with slipping with either. If you think you will have a problem with slipping the DE89L will not help as the friction is practically the same as the DE89. The lines are too smooth for any real added grip. You will need to get a knurled aftermarket handle.
