Is the Edwin Jagger DE 8911-BL good for beginners?

Most certainly. Just take it slow, use the correct blade angle and use no pressure.

I started with a DE89 and still enjoy it. It's a great razor for both beginner and experienced. I always recommend it because you won't feel the need to upgrade to something shinier and more expensive.

I started with a DE89L, and a year and a half later it's the only razor I use and I get great shaves. I've never tried a Merkur, but B&B advice generally says that you really can't lose with either a Merkur or an EJ.

The only thing wrong with the ejde89 line is that they are not stainless steel. The ejde89lbl was my first razor and still my favorite even after acquiring 3 other razors.
