Edward Green Inverness

does anyone know what the difference is between these two shoes besides EG being specifically made for BB? Do any of you have experience with the 888 last? How does it fit in relation to lasts from other English shoemakers? Is it more elongated? I wear a 9D on the Alden Hampton last - does this mean I would wear a UK8 on the 888 last? The only upside I can see to ordering the EG/BB variant is that they're in US sizes and they come with shoe trees. BUT, the inverness is approximately $200 cheaper at Leffot.

I have no plans on buying this particular shoe anytime soon. I much prefer the Beaulieu by EG which I believe is also on the 888 last:

Hi gaseousclay,

I was just looking at those on the Brooks Brothers site last night (boredom since I can't justify another pair without another huge discount) but I remember reading someone saying that they are basically the Inverness. In fact, I think there is no difference and they're not made 'specifically' for Brooks Brothers. It's just that BB is now stocking Edward Greens again so there should be little variation between the two. I think their length is about on par with my Loake 1880s, Church's City Line, and my C&J shoes. Perhaps a little sleeker but not substantially longer and I found that my 11E (11.5D US) fit a little snug but not uncomfortably so and I have already felt the leather giving a bit as it stretches with every wearing. I don't normally go a full size down for UK sizing and I find half a size generally works (but your mileage may vary here). I will however note that my EGs for Ralph Lauren were on the 89 Last (unique to the RL Purple Label, apparently) so I can't comment as to the 888 last but I think I read either on AskAndy or StyleForum that the 888 is a little more generous in terms of fit so it isn't as narrow as the 89 or 808 lasts but I'm not sure how much more generous.

The Beaulieus look amazing, by the way. I have been hankering for a pair of austerity brogues and I missed out when Herring Shoes sold out of the style they had made by Cheaney.

that's what I was thinking. I don't like that you're forced to pay $200 more for the same shoe just for the shoe trees.

by the way, are there any online UK retailers of EG that ship to the US? since Alfred Sargent no longer allows their vendors to ship outside the EU, I wonder if this is the same arrangement that other English shoemakers have with their vendors? it would be nice to order a pair of EG's cheaper than what US retailers are charging

I don't know of any online UK retailers but you could e-mail/ring EG directly. They might be able to ship you a pair and remove VAT (but there's a good chance US Customs will ding you). I've ordered something like 13 pairs of shoes from the UK via Herrings (not all for me) in the past 2 years alone with no problems but my 13th and most recent pair got me dinged at 37% value. EGs might be more painful if they happen to notice it.

Yes, I agree. I'm not sure the $200 premium is worth it for shoe trees (lasted or not) and shoe bags. Though I have heard that, if you inquire, they'll send you shoe bags for free. I might ask them.

Best,

Michael
