is there any way to categorize the sharpness of the feather vs the straight? i realize coatings, thickness, and other variables come into play, but what sort of story to the striations tell?
The striations are just how the steel was removed depending on the particular matter that was used to hone the steel. The closer the striations are in the edge itself the smoother and sharper the shave. I find the best edges are with a good japanese natural stone. They are not the sharpest out there but they are plenty sharp and with the smoothest edges. I also find the edge lasts much longer this way. When you go too thin on the edge it wont hold up that long and to get it that thin takes pastes or film. Which can make little teeth like a saw on the edge leading to a rougher but sharper edge. just my 2 cents, hope this helps
Fantastic pictures, thanks. Amazing stuff, your work really did make a noticable difference, I would love to shave with the blade you worked on, but the new blade...it looks like it would tear my head off! I know it won't but it sure looks like it would.
Also, the blade edge seems to pick up the surface of the stone that it is worked on, they look very similar...cool.
