Edge examination

Does anyone use anything for edge examination?

I tend to eyeball it. I can see the edge detail in my DE blades easy enough, though I can't see the microscopic scratches left by the sharpening process. I could also tell the straight wasn't as sharp as the DEs... and now my straight's coming back from Lynn, so I'm going to take a quick look and get an idea for how sharp the edge should be.

I see all this use of microscopes... is that just for looking at the tiniest details? I don't see anything relevant for me to use a microscope for examining the blade edge; the only thing vaguely interesting turns out to mean "strop the blade and it's fixed."

I can see everything that I *need* to see using a 10x loupe.

I can see more detail using a 20x loupe and can start to see whats going on at the teeny tiny level. But at 200x I can really see whats going on. At the SEM level, we can see whats going on at the sub micron level.

Does any of that help with actual honing/edge evaluation? Not any more than shaving your face.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. I can see tiny knicks if they matter at all just by sight.

I work in an ophthalmic lab, and I have a couple relatively high plus power lenses we made that didn't pass final inspection. I think they're around +12 diopters or so. Plenty of power for my honing needs.

If you guys ever want to unload some of those "junkers":001_rolle, let me know:tongue_sm

I notice this coming up ever so often, but my question is...

What the hell would I be looking for even if I had one?! Ha ha.

Is there an illustrated guide to diagnosing what you see?

This means overhoning, this means poorly-set bevel, etc. etc.

Exactly.

Chips. Different bevels. If you see different bevel layers, make sure the one your putting on there extends all the way to the edge. Other than that...shave test is a better test, IME. There might be other things that I use the loupe to check for but don't remember or do it unconsciously.
