I hear a bit about Arkies and have been playing ith the idea of getting one. What kind of edge do they put on a razor? Is it super sharp like a synthetic? Is in comfortable but not as sharp like a coti? Somewhere in between?
Some of the best edges Ive shaved with have been finished on super hard Arks.
Factually, if the person honing is capable, and the stone is of good quality, the finished edge off one of those arks will be as smooth and keen as any. Possibly smoother and keener too.
I'm travelling an Arkie road right now and am using a vintage translucent as the final finisher on all the edges I use. I'm getting an easily noticeable increase in keenness but I can't comment about smooth, except to say that irritation hasn't been a problem. The shaves, however, are so close that I really can't justify a third pass and when I do it anyway, I just have to skip the next day's shave because there's too little whisker. I could force it, but don't.
What using the Arkie forces me to do, however, is go back and reappraise all my edges. To my horror, quite a few of them should never have been released into the wild.Unfinished bevels, errant scratches and even the occasional small nick or group of nicks visible only through a loupe.
As I say, however, still learning so take it all with jaundice in the eye. I've got another translucent coming and two surgical blacks and I'm done for a while with buying stones. (Like Noah, I now have two of everything. If more show up, I just tell my wife they're breeding.) These rocks may teach me something new about arkies as well.
I would offer to hone one for you, but what I turn out may not be representative of what they can do.
