What's new

eBay g3 Eagle... who won.

Congrats to whoever won. I'll admit I had a bid in on it just to have a second I could gift when I needed it, but ya beat me (barely). You're going to like it. I just got a Chubby 1 Best to do a compare between them, and they are different enough that I want to keep both, but still quite similar brushes. My 2 favorite Simpson brushes so far. I really am digging this Simpson Best hair.

Oh wow, I didn't even notice it was Loric selling it. Needed room for the 2XL (and Semogue LE and...) I guess?

We got to pick his brain on what he kept and why.

I just have to many brushes. Granted most have their won personality, but when you get down to it, many are very similar to one another. Plus though no one here would believe it, but I'm more of a minimalist at heart. I have to try EVERYTHING when I start a new hobby, but I always pear back after I get that out of my system.

As for what I'm keeping:

-Rudy Vey glass Jar with TGN 22mm Super Silvertip set low - similar to the Eagle G3 but softer on the face.

-Rudy Vey Eagle w/ 24mm TGN Finest Xtra Stuffed - best handle I have hands down, good knot

-Rooney Finest 3/2 - I like the backbone of the Finest despite the prickly tips....and the tips are s...l...o...w...l...y mellowing out with every use.

-Rooney XXL - Again similar to the Eagle G3 knot, but bigger and softer. Plus my eagle had a little bit of a funny shaped knot and that irked me.

-M&F Blond Badger - The backbone and uber soft tips make me fall in love with this one. The hair is a little wiry but as the tips break in they feel more and more like the new Rooney two band tips but longer. The base feels more wiery than a Rooney Finest, but its in the ball park for backbone.

-Lee Sabini horn handle silvertip 26mm - Dense, medium soft, big, and scrubby. I had the Shavemad D01, Stubby 3 thee band, Chubby 3 Super that all felt very very similar, the horn handle was the best size/softness and had the most comfortable handle so I kept that one.

Maybe list:
-Shavemac 24mm D01 - Beautiful handle, great knot, uber backbone and high loft make it a touch different from the other Chubby style brushes.

-Shavemac 24mm D01 two band flat top - I like this brush, but the loft is a touch high for me, so I dont pick it up as much as it deserves.

-Semoge Owners Club - I like this brush more and more it breaks in (might even be done breaking in now???). I like bigger brushes, but for some reason this with the higher loft I think I like smaller boar brushes. I have the B&B LE Semoge, Portuguese Excelsior, and Omega 81056 (22mm x 50mm) on the way to test out this theory,

-Simpson Duke 3 - The softest best I have tried yet, its a bit low (to me) on density though. It is more of a cream brush but as that it fits a niche in my collection none of my other brushes do. Plus the knot is a nice shaped flat bulb that is also pleasant.

-TGN 22mm Black Badger in black pear handle - its just pretty, to skritcy really, but I like looking at it.

I would love to have that as my 'minimalist' stash...:w00t:

You must have missed the "at heart" line... I really suffered from overload picking out a brush. To much of a good thing and all.

WAHHHHHHHHH boo hoo hoo :em18:

And really 6 (maybe 9) brushes is a step in the right direction from 12-15.

I can't believe I missed this. I'd pretty much given up checking ebay.

(insert sound of me kicking myself over and over again)

I think that with the new rules over on BST we may see more of 'our' stuff heading to ebay if the buyer has already listed their one post for the month but need/want to sell something.

Like the B&B LE brushes, it's doubtful someone who doesn't know the brush or who thinks it's a pure Eagle would be willing to go as high as B&B'ers who know what the brush is will spend, so it's unlikely to leave the forum when it comes right down to it. The only real shame is eBay taking a cut for really doing nothing (since they didn't really connect the buyer and seller, them both being members after all). But if the mods think it helps avoid scams and abuse of BST, a few (hundred) dollars making their way to eBay don't bother me much... of course I did just sell a handful of vintage Simpsons I thought were worth $30-40 for about $100 each on eBay, so a spoonful of sugar and all that.

As for this particular brush. RidgeRunner won it according to the Scores forum.

 I was thinking the same.
I went through a similar thing with brushes but really did pare down. I now only have a Semogue LE 2009 and a Thater 22mm silvertip.

Let's not talk about that Semogue LE face lathering brush that should be coming soon...

The Eagle sold for $97 and change to a forum member. So did your spoonfuls of sugar go to people that didn't know what they were getting or to forum members that would have been protected from overpaying by 2x-3x if sold on BST? The new rules are doing good but there are downsides to the changes and this is one of them.

Most likely if I'd put the brushes on BST, they wouldn't have sold. One of the brushes I actually had on BST for $30 or $35 a month or two ago without even a nibble. It sold on eBay for $90-something. My guess is there are Simpsons/Bakelite collectors outside B&B who value low end simpsons (these weren't chubby's or anything like that) much higher than guys who are looking for brushes to reknot or use do. That doesn't apply so much to stuff like the G3 Eagle because no one outside B&B knows what it is. It was made for B&B.

I'm not overly concerned about the BST changes. I figure they're still a work in progress and a better solution will be found eventually. Anyway this isn't the place to discuss it.

It may be more than that. On BST, prices were almost always reasonable and, in the rare occasions when they were not, adjustments were made, mostly gracefully.

On Ebay, there is always the possibility ("dream") that a bidding war will develop over an item you're trying to sell. Just think of what we have seen in this thread with items that would have gone for $30/$40 on BST going for $100 on Ebay.

I have no idea of the dynamics of where the changes will lead, but I think Ebay will move a lot of items previously moved here on BST or in trades.

Ebay won't necessarily see it all as there are many here that are members of multiple forums. There should be a good increase in all the other BST forums as well.
