Eau d'Hermes

Came across this great bit: http://thetrad.blogspot.com/2011/03/charlotte-rampling-eau-dhermes.html Any opinions on the scent? Doesn't seem to be very available in the US.

I wouldn't exactly call it sex in a bottle or even really all that animalic or even much of a leather. There's a healthy dose of cumin in it that on some people really pops and ruins it but on some it's tame. I didn't find the cumin notes all that strong but I could tell it was there. Essentially it was citrus, cumin, and oakmoss, maybe some other notes, but as a whole it was short-lived and unimpressive. Yeah, ok, there is a slight leather note but there are so many other (and better) versions of this. The first thing that comes to mind is Jules by Dior, which is much more impressive.

I'm a big fan

I've only found it at the Hermes boutiques

There's a leather note in the drydown, but it's not a dominant note. It's more to compliment the lavender, vanilla, cumin, oakmoss, sandalwood and civet.

I've owned both, Jules is a completely different animal; herbaceous, rich leather and very much an 80's loud, bombastic powerhouse, yet quite refined.

The leather in Jules is like a motorcycle jacket, your leather armour. In EdH it's soft and supple, like a fine wallet or, given the animalic notes and the connotations they usually bring....a leather whip

Note: Comments re: bottles with copper cap, not the reformulated clear cap versions

I've always read positive comments on Eau d'Hermes, but it has up until now always escaped me. I will need to seek this one out the next time I pick up a few samples.

I got a sample of this last week. It's a spicy civet bomb. This stuff reminds me somewhat of Givenchy Gentleman, it's certainly dark, heavy, and very spicy, but not sweet. The cumin isn't as bad as I would have thought, that can sometimes smell like BO, seems almost to be more of a cinnamon type spice. It's leathery as well, with a good amount of civet, supposed to smell like the inside of an Hermes bag, which I can sort of see. It's a big loud thing like Kouros. Will have to try it out some more to form a better opinion, certainly worth a try.

Love it. The cumin and tart lemon opening can be ... discouraging at first. It's worth getting through those first few minutes - one of the best dry downs I've encountered follows.

Who knows what happened in the reformulation. I'm not optimistic.
