Hi everyone. I'm excited to let you all know that I received in the mail today a very early straight razor that I purchased off ebay. My 3rd edition Standard Guide to Razors dates this type of razor as being produced around the 1700s or earlier. I haven't used it yet but I do intend on honing within the next week or so. Any comments or suggestions?

What a great find. I love the history of razors and that's a great piece. I don't think I've seen anything that old before that you could still use. You've got to keep us updated on how you find it to hone and what it shaves like.

Are you joking or serious? If joking, "titter". If serious, then I doubt it will be of much use. Those things are likely a step above scraping whiskers off with a scallop shell.
I don't know if I'd shave with it given its possible age and history. As for it being a possible fake, i don't know. The patina looks as though it could be a little old, and definitely looks older than the one in the SRP thread posted.

I was shown a half dozen of these tools for sale at an antique store in Vienna, Georgia back in September. I declined as they were most likely made up fakes.

Only $12.99?! I would think they would be worth more if they were really from that period. I'm assuming those are replica's.

I thought the Chinese Revolution was about 1948 or so. That ended their colonial period. History goofs us up again!
Actually, that razor does not look like the ones for sale by the SMKW link. A bit of care is due here. Let's not jump to conclusions.

I use this razor as a display piece in my glass cabinet along with my other straights and safety razors. It's a nice show piece hehe. Yes I got suckered but that's how we learn. I hope nobody else buys one of these thinking it's the real thing.
hope you arnt out too much mate. still, for a replica it still would look pretty cool in a cabinet.

To clarify, these razors are touted as being BOTH Chinese razors AND as Colonial razors from the era of the American revolution.
I saw that. I was just pointing out that very anomaly.
