Duffle Coat

Hi Gents,

I'm wondering if anyone has a recommendation on a duffle coat. I tried one on at Brooks Brothers, and it felt very warm and well-made. I also like the look of the Gloveralls.

Thanks!

I have a Gloverall and wear it daily in the winter. The coat fits well and I am able to wear a sports jacket underneath it. I have had mine for the past year and have not had any problems with it.

Sierra Trading Post occasionally has Gloverall duffle coats. They have some now, but only in size 44 (for blue or brown) or 46 (for brown). Price looks good -- $239.96 -- which they claim is $400 off full retail.

Don't know about over the pond but direct from Gloverall, both men's styles, the Monty and the more modern Classic are £265 which Google tells me is $413!

It seems tougher to find a duffel in pure wool these days than in the past. If all wool doesn't matter to you, there are numerous brands to choose from. An old classic.

And mitten friendly.

Duffle coats are true timeless classics and if you get a good one, will keep you as warm as anything. They're also great for the rain and should last for decades. I'd be less concerned with whether its 100% wool, than with the thickness of the cloth and what the other material is. I've just bought a nice one which is 78% wool and 22% nylon, but was twice as thick as the 100% wool one next to it, meaning it actually has more wool than the "better" one, and is much tougher. It also has taped seams, which is a great detail. Unless you're getting one from Orvis or the like, I'd only make this purchase in person at the shop. Urban Outfitters in The UK did a range of duffles a couple of years ago, for 10 pounds on sale! They were vintage examples from a looong time ago in thick worsted wool and once I got a big thick scarf to go with it, I wasn't cold, even at -8 celcius.
Note:- I'd only get a navy blue, black or very dark green one. You only really need one and for me at least, the lighter and/or brown ones always look a bit wrong. And I'd definitely make sure to try it on while wearing the thickest jumper you've got!

Another vote for Gloverall-I have a blue and a dark green and love them. Warm, dry, versatile, easy to wear and with a great history. Pay attention to the details-models vary-some with collar and hood, only hood, detachable hood, sleeve buttons or toggles or not, only toggle closure or inner zipper or buttons. Also watch sizing depending on use-I went a size up with my second one as I use it over a sport coat/suit. The outer garment of the Royal Navy, an Ivy League classic from the Trad times, it never goes out of style and a good one never wears out!!

I love the looks of duffel coats, and I bought one this Autumn. It's black (I don't look very good in blue). Cotton lining and 60/40 wool outer. If you want a duffel to perform authentically, that is against water and wind, get one with a high wool blend (as much as possible). Mine has two small holes in the armpit with stamped rings for ventilation.

Also, if you want it to perform well in wind, get a zippered one. You can always not zip it up if it's too warm. Mine doesn't have one, but I wear it from 32 to -4 F, with thicker jumpers and a scarf at the coldest. Make sure you can button it up all the way to/over your chin too.

I'll get a pic if you like.

Tell us what you decide on!
