Duck Hunting México

$image.jpg

My first hunting of the season At Sisal, México

why do people go to mexico and argentina and places like that to shoot birds? Are there fewer regulations and no limit or something?

Sergio,
I assume that isn't your guide's dog in the background right?

if you are game, I would love to hear a lot more details. Is it substantially different from the experience of hunting them in the US?

I would think a Spanish duck call is essential; otherwise the birds won't understand.:wink2:

Wrong. Remember, these birds only winter down in Mexico. They were most likely hatched and raised in Canada. You'll need either an English or French Canadian duck call for proper communication.

That explains a lot! The Brooklyn accent is not as effective as I hoped.

That's right! It's the retriever that needs the Spanish. My bad.

Hmmm Jim. I find a Brooklyn accent works just fine in all regions getting and attracting attention!

Nice bag Sergio! Envious of where bluebird conditions are ideal!

LOL no it´s not my dog, in fact. i have no dog.

I´ve never hunted in the usa so i dont know how differente is. We start around 4:00 am, depending on the site we choosed and how far it is, i have to pick up my local guide who is the same usually for years and he storage my decoys at his house and also my little boat, then we go to the hunting area that is usually around 20 miles from town, there is not paved road, in fact, there is no road, so you need a 4X4 vehicle to get there.
Once you got there yo take the boat (no motor allowed) into the water and the local guide takes you to your blind to wait for the sunrise. He puts de decoys in place, hides with you into the blind and begins to call; he is the expert with the calls and got his own calls, i also have my own calls but i´m not an expert as him.

Number of ducks: this season begun in december 4th and will end in late march. I´m allowed to hunt 120 ducks during the season. We (the hunters) have authorized 22,000 ducks for all the season and you have to buy a kind of "strip" for each 30 ducks, and thats not randomly but that is according with the criteria of the authorities depending on the studies conducted by the goverment and non goverment organizations as Ducks Unlimited that have a research facilities with biologist and students here in the yucatan peninsula in the gulf of mexico.

After the hunting we pick the decoys up as well as the ducks fallen. then we go to the check point where the authorities take a look at your permits and count how many ducks, kind, hence or drake and write it down in your "strip" and on his logbook for the record.

Thats basically our method,

Here in this province (Yucatan) we only have one area where duck hunting is allowed and its called (ecological reserve of The Palmar)

Cheers

Thanks:

there are 62 ducks and thats the half of my yearly share in just one hunting session.

Sergio,
Thank you SO much for writing that up. It's fascinating. Some of the things are similar to the US (waking up at 4am and the guide doing the calling) and some are quite different. For instance the way you structure the Limit of ducks to which you're entitled.

Again, thanks for sharing that.

Sergio,
Thank you and I'm honored and flattered to be asked. Foreign hunting trips aren't on my schedule for a long time, but anything can happen.
