I just got home from our honeymoon in Dublin and had a great time with beautifull sunny weather....was simply perfect.
To begin I have a mediterranien kind of beard black and tough (according to the barber in my city).. now on to the little review
when over there I had to try out some hot towel shaves, i got recommended Waldorf Barbers, so naturally I had to try them, and I must say THAT was an experience.... you go down a flight of stairs from street level and had (almost) everything set out to seem exactly like I imagined a 50s or 60s barber should look and smell like. from the old posters for brylcreme and other 50s barber items to 50s music playing, sounding like from an old radio. Fantastic
The one thing that differs from the old times was, that 2 of the 3 barbers manning the shop where women dressed in white smocks, I didn´t mind that one bit, and when it was my turn I got one of the female barbers.
I was an extremly nice experience (not only because it was a woman shaving me ) , it took about half an hour (not waiting included) with a 2 pass shave, with what looked like a real straight razor (no shavette) and a nice smelling aftershave.
no nicks at all, the shave was decent (but not perfect) and the price was 35.
To compare I also had a hot towel shave in one of the Max barbers (or E max barbers...couldn´t quite figure there signs)
here the it more looked like a modern salon but only manned by men in everyday clothes.
the shave was very nice and more thorough than in waldorf barbers...2 pass shave and he did a great number of feeling for straggling whiskers. and a nice lemony balm to finish i had 2-3 tiny little nicks (not that it matters to me ...didn´t feel a thing). The whole thing took about half an hour.
The price was 15
the shave in Max´s was bit closer....my problem area is under the chin, the only way to get reasonably close is to go from bottom to top in 45 degrees and then kind of horizontal right to left (if that gives any meaning), and no barber I ever tried have yet managed a BBS, then again I have only tried 3.
but back to the review
the Waldorf gives an excellent experience and I think that is also what you pay extra for ...the experience. The shave was ultra relaxing and nice, but i´ve had closer shaves by my self
Max´s Barbers gives a (for me) bit closer shave. The full old school barbershop feel isn´t there but the shave is just as relaxing as the Waldorf. so if its just the shave and you don´t care about the environment i recommend Max´s
last thing that should be said is: Dublin absolutely swims in barber shops and I only had time to try 2 of them, seems like the Regent Barbers have more or less the same kind of barbershop setting as Waldorf, so I would definitely pay them a visit next time I´m in Dublin.
Also the Quality of the shave might for you have the YMMV, I´m beginning to suspect I have a really problematic chin beard
Thanks for looking
