In law school we smoked Drum. It was a cheap, VERY GOOD smoke.

I had a Rizla roller that cranked out a good cig in seconds. To maximize economy I would take 2 butts with a little filler to crank out a new cig.

I still have the Rizla but haven’t seen Drum in years. Is it still out there?

Yep, you can still get it here. Used to roll it on occasion. I preferred Golden Virginia (this is UK)

Old Holborn was a classic too. More robust than GV.

Drum was quite an astringent smoke. Dutch stuff. There was another Dutch tobacco called Samson. I rather preferred that.

Shame there was never a Lucky Strike rolling tobacco. That would have been amazing.

Luckies were my favourite cigarette when I could get them. Used to smoke the unfiltered in the paper pack.

Yeah I used to grab a pack on occasion. Red package with white writing? I think they were the first ever king size cig made.

There was a nice specialist tobacconist on the seafront in a place called Margate, 2-3 miles from where I lived, 78-79. You could pick up unfiltered Luckies, Camel, Chesterfield, Pall Mall and others. US sourced, not European made.

The cigarette section was dazzling, literally. Obscure brands from all over the world. The packaging was wonderful.

Masses of specialist pipe tobacco jarred, premium cigars, all the accessories one could desire. Good and expensive pipes. I was too young to appreciate it. It was a treasure trove now I recall.

The US cigs were £1 a pack. A lot in 79.

I smoked Pall Malls in the Navy back in 1960. Aboard ship you could buy them duty free for 10 cents a pack. In a store, 23 cents.
Now they sell for around 8 dollars a pack. Glad I quit years ago.

I dont smoke anymore, I do use Swedish Snus however. But I liked drum. I smoked Gauloises, English Ovals, Dunhill, Camel, and Marlboro. That blue bag of Drum was a treat for roll your own though. Very rich.

Drum and Samson are two names I’ve not heard for a long, long time. Takes me back to my university days in the late 80s. Golden Virginia and Old Holborn were the go-tos along with the odd pouch of Gauloises if you were feeling brave. Drum and Samson could be had for cheap, duty-free, if you got the ferry over to somewhere like Amsterdam, or Calais and you could make a few quid on the grey market loading up past your allowance and reselling back on campus, as they were not available in the U.K. and had something of a ‘grail’ status.
Back then I could roll a cigarette and light it with my Zippo all with one hand. Gave up smoking decades ago and don’t miss it at all, but still think back to those days often.

I remember seeing ryo brands like Drum, Bugler, and Bull Durham on the drug store shelves when I started with the pipe in the 70s. I don't know about the others but I think Bugler is still around.

Daughters and Ryan make several that are shag cut, and which I believe is RYO masquerading as pipe tobacco.
Ryback is another one.

Luckies made/still make it. Bought and smoked it. I preferred a different brand, but the name i can't remember anymore.
