Dream Watches

I suppose a lot of watches fall into the "dream watch" category, for me, but this not-yet-released Longines totally blows me away. Simple, elegant, and beautiful. How much do you think something like this will cost?

What is your current dream watch?

Tim

I'd guess MSRP would be around $5000.00. You should be able to find one much cheaper if you look around. Longines makes a nice watch, but they are heavily discounted by AD's. If you do decide to buy one, don't forget about the resale value.

My dream watches are made by JLC or IWC

I still just want a real Panerai Luminor Marina (PAM 00005).

There is a man (early 50's?) in my doctoral program who wears one of these as his daily wear watch. He had no idea how special it was; he just bought it with some record sales royalties because a salesman told him to some time ago. When I saw it, I about fell off my chair. It looks amazing in person.

If he bought it before 1997, it's a Pre-Vendome model. Panerai primarily supplied the Italian military but it produced some watches for consumers in the 1990s. Panerai was purchased by the Vendome/Richemont group in the late 90s. They also own other luxury brands like Jaeger-LeCoultre, IWC, Montblanc, etc.

The early Panerais, so-called Pre-Vendome models, are worth a mint now. They're highly collectible and worth $25,000 - or more.

The simple fact is when you start talking about multi thousand dollar watches the main thing that sells the watch is the name on the dial. Longines simply does not have that cache. That's why Rolex can get the astronomical prices for their watches and sell every watch they make. It has little to do with the actual quality of the watch.

as a watch nut, I could argue all day about this. Watch collectors argue this point ad nauseum.

Branding does matter, but having said that, there are differences in quality. A modern Longines and a Rolex differ not only in name recognition, but in quality as well. Rolexes have in-house movements - manufactured completely by Rolex, while Longines use ETA movements that have some extra finishing, possibly.

You can argue 'till the cows come home whether Rolexes are "worth the cost" but it's hard to argue against the fact that they hold their value extraordinarily well and even appreciate in value over the years. Their movements, while not the most beautifully finished in the world, are extraordinarily durable and accurate over time.

Is there a website where I can find out which watch manufacturers manufacture their own movements and which use other manufacturers movements?

Would Love to have this watch in white gold or platinum.

The only watch I've ever dreamed about owning was a Rolex Submariner in stainless. I was probably under the influence of all the spy novels I was reading--thought that it would be an appropriate watch for an international man of mystery. When I got my first promotion at work, I bought it for myself and I've worn it just about every day for the last twenty five years. Maybe the best purchase I ever made.

Good choice and my favorite watch as well. I have worn mine for 10 years now. It now belongs to my son. It was gifted to him on his wedding day.

it's the best known general watch discussion site. If you're interested in wrist watches, that's pretty much the best site for all around watch info. They have discussion forums for general interest and watch brand specific discussions for various brands - from Seiko to Rolex to the highest end manufacturers like Vacheron, Breguet, Blancpain, etc.

That Vacheron is gorgeous, BTW. A real holy grail-type watch.

As a student I don't have the 'bus fare' to get into watches like Rolex, Paneri, and Omega. I own a Quartz TAG, a Longines, Citizen Eco drive and a Quartz Seiko.
At the moment my dream is to graduate, start earning, and one day have the coin to buy myself an Omega Seamaster or Speedmaster. If I ever reach that point , I guess I will still dream of even more expensive and exclusive watches.

Longines have made a number of Lindberg specials honouring the great man. All have been very classy watches.

My dream watch.

IWC GST Perpetual Calendar.

Hopefully I'll have one soon if I can find a second hand one in good condition for a good price.
