DR Harris Bowls

So I am looking to add another soap and I was interested in trying a DR Harris as it gets a lot of good reviews here. Almost all of the discussions I read were basically just debating scents. I see there are two bowls and pricing is all over the place depending on where you look. Which one is suppose to be the better of the two? I am concerned about longevity it being made of wood and taking on water with daily use. I'd rather not waste money on the bowl if its not going to last. Thanks for any help.

I can't tell any difference in my Harris bowls, which I think are all made out of the same wood and stained in the "effect" of the wood name. Mine have held up very well but the oldest one I have has been here less than a year. The soaps are some of my favorites.

I have two Harris soaps in mahogany bowls and one in beech. I don't notice any difference between them other than appearance. My oldest bowl is about 10 months and I see no change in the bowl despite the fact that I completely cover my soaps with hot water and let it sit before loading. I also have a Harris soap in a tin container and another in a 1 cup Pyrex bowl. To be honest I actually prefer the Pyrex because it seals tightly and can be stacked in a drawer. The lids on the wood bowls are loose fitting and the bowls don't stack well, sliding off each other when I open the drawer. If you do decide on a wood bowl, there are threads about care of them here and here.

I reloaded a Trumper wooden bowl for well over twenty years of off&on beard trim use, and it now, cleaned up, holds odds and ends on the dresser. Don't worry.

PS, maybe it was ten years, I have no sense of time, but it was a lonnnggggg time with no problems

I have the DR Harris Arlington in a Beechwood bowl, great scent. Been using it for about 2 months now with no problems. I wish I would have gotten the mahogany bowl just for aesthetic reasons but I imagine the quality is the same. My only complaint is that the lather is a little runny compared to my creams. But, that could just be my cheap tweezerman brush is not build well for soaps lol.

If you're anal you could wax the bowls, I've heard.

I just wouldn't bother with it if I had to jump through all those hoops.

Thanks for the replies, I think I'll be getting it soon. Its too nice of a bowl to pass up. Just have to see what else I need to put an order together.

The wood type shouldn't matter - purely aesthetic. As I recently learned, the important thing is to let the soap dry a bit before putting the lid back on. Otherwise, the excess moisture trapped inside could cause the lid to warp.
