Dovo Leather Case

Not strictly on point but I do have a Dovo leather case for my safety razor. It's 5 years old and showing no signs of wear.

Dovo stuff is usually very good so I'd be confident that the straight case is made to the same standard.

HTH!

i really like that case myself though i have been reticent because it appears from some reviews that it is a tight fit for 6/8 razors. everyone seems to like the quality a lot so if you do get one i would be interested in your thoughts on it.

Does any one have any experience with the Dovo straight razor case labeled as 857050 in the link below? I really think the case is attractive, but I would like to read about other people's experiences. Thanks!

I had one and just gave it away. It was too small for most of my razors but two original Wapis fit in it just fine.

The case is definitely small. I don't think I would use it for 6/8's razors, even though some advertise that you can. The case also looks to be tight length-wise. I am not even sure it fully closes around the edges when it is latched shut. The case does look gorgeous though. I think I might look around for something else.

Thanks for the replies.

I'd go for the one that holds several straights. I don't have one yet, but I'll be getting one soon as I generally take along several of my straights when I travel. :001_smile

I'd thought I'd resurrect this old thread just to let anyone who may be interested know that The Superior Shave has this splendid genuine Dovo leather case on sale right now for more than 33% off. I had my eye on one for months but the price was just too steep anywhere I looked. With this massive discount, I did not hesitate to pick one up and it's absolutely gorgeous. It fits my two 5/8" all stainless steel Inox Dovos (4155845 & 4155846) perfectly, but as stated above, I wouldn't say there's much room for anything longer.

The potential problem with storage in a leather pouch is staining and corrosion issues. This has been covered quite a bit with serious knife collectors. They won't store knives in the sheath. I had a problem with this very thing on some of my knives as well. Won't do it any more for a length of time.
most leathers have been tanned with harsh chemicals that can leach out over time and cause staining. Also leather tends to attract and hold moisture.
a quick google search will confirm this. Even the vegetable tanned hides have been known to do this as well.
A case where the razor isn't in direct contact with the steel shouldn't be a problem but I'd be wary of using a true pouch.
Just thought I'd throw this out there.

Dovo cases are pretty nice, but a tad spendy. For about $33.00 I picked this up on Amazon. Works great, holds 12 razors without issue.
Other sizes are available

Thanks for the warning. I have read the same concerns regarding the storage of blades in leather, especially with reference to tannins in the leather that may promote corrosion in metal. When I discussed the subject of how a layer of protective mineral oil may affect the leather lining of the case to inhibit oxidization, he suggested Ballistol as it is frequently considered a safe option. I am quite familiar with Ballistol for use in protecting firearms, so I already have a considerable supply of it. It does not trap water underneath a layer of oil because it is water-soluble, and instead emulsifies with water to let it evaporate naturally. It is also purported (at least by the manufacturer) to neutralize the tannic acid in tanned leather.

Klever-Ballistol, the manufacturers of Ballistol, state:
If properly processed, leather will contain acidic residues from tannic acid. BALLISTOL will form a permanent chemical compound with these residues within the leather which will make the leather virtually impermeable to water. Handguns, in particular police handguns, are mostly carried and even stored in leather holsters. Corrosion may develop in the areas where they have direct contact with the leather. By treating the inside of the holster with BALLISTOL the acidic residues from tannic acid will be completely neutralized and this source of corrosion will be eliminated.

Now I don't know if all of that is 100% accurate, but it does have a considerable track record as it has been around since 1904. I'll be sure to inspect the razors regularly in any case, even with a coating of Ballistol on them. What do you think? Thanks for your comment.
