Double Ring All Time High ?

This Double Ring is one of only 25,424 produced in 1904 with the "PAT. APL'D FOR" on the handle and also serial numbered. The later ones starting after November of 1904 all were identified with the actual patent date of Nov. 15 '04. It is in very good condition with little or no brassing, straight teeth, and no cracks in the handle. Check here for the cased one AsylumGuido sold three years ago.

Yes, I won it! I like it and will give it a good home. Now if anyone has a Chicago case they want to sell, I'm open to offers.

Wow Nice congrats, My max would of been $400.00 because of its status, so you did well, Enjoy it )

Well... an apology is in order. I don't think you're an idiot in the slightest. I was also unaware of the additional circumstances that make this razor extra-rare and valuable. Nice score! I wish you luck in finding the matching case.

Way out of my league. Congrats on one hell of a rare razor.

Quite a score. A razor is always worth exactly what somebody is willing to pay, IMHO, and while I can't see forking over that much, I'm sure that both buyer and seller are happy, and that's what it's all about.

Let us know how you think of it as a shaver! :thumbup1:

Thanks to all! A Double Ring was one of my last quest. I put a BIN $500 Chicago cased Double Ring in my watch list last year and lost out when it sold while I dithered about it too long. I realize that I will probably never find the right case for this razor. On the other hand I also thought that I might never find a cased PAT. APL'D FOR Double Ring razor in such nice condition as this one. It does tickle my fancy to have a true 1904 Gillette razor when so many Ebay sellers erroneously say they have a 1904 razor for sale because of the Nov. 15 1904 patent dates. :001_smile
It makes me laugh when I read about trouble with the wives and the ADs. In my case, I am the wife with the razor, brush, and shave soap ADs. Though I think my husband is catching the bug because today he shaved with the Darwin on one side of his face and his new Bull Mastiff long comb new razor on the other, to compare the two, then told me I'd better get the order placed for the second display case for our razors.

Been watching that one for days. The seller didn't seem to know what it was. He had some nice razors for sale. I bought a really clean Cooper DE from him.

 Not that anybody should give anything less than their full and honest opinion on these listings, but I think it would help contain the spread of foot-in-mouth disease if we just assumed that anybody willing to pay that kind of money for a razor is probably a member of B&B.

Congrats on your new toy. I am just contemplating what it would be like if there were no "check" on my RAD and if in fact SWMBO enabled it at every turn... :tongue_sm

I realize that I will probably never find the right case for this razor.

I swear I've seen one for sale recently. IIRC its ribbon banner in the box top lining read Gillette Sales Co. Times Square New York, NY, or something to that effect. If I can find it I'll PM you a link.

Also from the Ebay listing Questions and Answers:

Q: Can you post the serial number on the razor and any writing on the bottom of the handle? That would be helpful on your other razors too. It's a way to be able to confirm when it was made and the type of gillette or other razor it is. I see this one has a number on the inside of the handle bottom and along one of the outside bands which is likely the patent date. thanks Mar-03-11
A: hello, Like I said the bottom of the handle is says Pat. Apl"d For. And the number on the cylinder is: hard to read but it looks like 15673 unsure of the 6 could be a 0. A nice clean razor. Thanks

Not just that, but it seems that half the time, when somebody posts about how ridiculous it was to pay $X for a razor, the thread turns into an explanation from collectors about how it was really worth that after all.

I don't know what anything is worth in any absolute sense, just what I'd be willing to pay. Some people are willing to pay a lot more.

Wow. That's silly money. I've got a cased Pat Appl For. I wonder what that'd be worth (not that I'm ever going to sell that one)?

I do too and I didn't buy it that long ago. But it is just one of those things. A collectable is only worth as much as people are prepared to pay. There were at least two or three people who felt that this razor is worth that money, so... it is.

I was lucky on mine. It looked like it might be Pat. apl'd for in the picture (it didn't say in the listing) and I took a gamble which paid off.

I think that looks like a nice one. You don't often see them so shiny.

:001_tt1: Slurp slobber slobber!!!

For me, you have gotten the sword from the stone:001_tongu
er' razor that is! Congratulations. If it takes you where you need to be
a million dollars is fine. I do not remember what I payed for my "06" single
all I know is when she is zipping through whiskers like samurai through noodles
I'm all smiles inside, truly a privilege.

I'd love to see pictures if you have them. I'm always up for nice razor porn. :001_tongu

There you go. From the front left is a Khaki, then an uncased Double Ring, then a Double Ring in a Gillette case and next is a Double ring in a sterling silver case made by a UK silversmith. I've sold the uncased Double Ring so now I've only got the two cased ones.

Very nice! :thumbup1: And to think I saw you post at one time about the trouble you had finding razors in Austrailia.

Beautiful razor and an earlier than the one I had. Very nice!

I don't think any of them came from Australia. My postage bill alone would have bought a nice razor collection.

WOW, I hadn't thought of that. I dread to add up my postage bill too :mad3:

I've now got two cased 1905s, one NY, one Chicago case, after John convinced me not to be such a cheapskate

Mine are not going anywhere in a hurry but if I ever sell first dibs to CONOZ - once we get this stuff here we never let it go
