What's new

Don't know how it happened but...

in the last 3 weeks or so I've become a williams user, actually more than that I guess you could call me a fan. Meant to revisit it for a week after using it for about a week when I got it a year ago to see how bad it truly was and how good my lathering skills were coming along. First week was as I remembered it and recieved a less than stellar first few shaves when the puck was still rock hard but it was getting better towards the weeks end. Fast forward three weeks though and I am getting great lather out of it that gives decent lubrication. Couple that with a faint clean soapy smell as the citronella candle smell disappeared and the fact that it can be found everywhere and cheaply to boot and it is a great soap. I guess it just requires some time to get there.

michiganlover,
I have plenty of good creams and soaps, including Tabac and am still enjoying the heck out of Williams. Not sure if I'm feeling positive enough about it to use it for my once a week straight shaves but it's working great for the DE ones.

Williams is a great soap, especially in a pinch. It just doesn't have the glamor of being hard to find. That said... while I have a puck or two in my closet, it isn't a soap I use unless everything else has run out! I think we're all elitists!

My comment was all in good fun.

If it works for you, then by all means keep right on using it. Williams with a straight, I think that is the ultimate in dangerous, living on the edge shaving.:eek:

Some people love Williams, some people hate it, and some people can't get it to perform correctly. I am in this final group, I can't get it to generate an adequate lather, and I am also not a huge fan of the Lemon Verbena/ Citronella scent.

I do have a puck of Williams in my shaving cabinet. Despite the fact that I don't love the smell, it does perform really well when Super Lathered with KMF Unscented.

Michiganlover,
Thinking I might try the straight and williams combo tomorrow, a little razor burn never killed anyone. I'm thinking it might just turn out o.k. though.

Now listen up, you mamby-pamby whiners! It seems that some of you are having problems with Williams Mug Shaving Soap. This isn't surprising.

Williams is not for the weak and worthless! Don't look around, numb brush! I'm talking to you!

You with your soft creams and your Euro-soaps...You are a disgusting soapbody! Williams has been delivering great shaves to great Americans since 1840. It has been to the Halls of Montezuma and to the Shores of Tripoli. For one hundred and sixty nine everloving years, this piece of history has been doing it's job. You can't even be bothered to swirl a brush for a few extra minutes!

I hear your sniveling..."It's hard to lather. It dries too quickly". Well, see here, private Crybaby. You have to work to make Williams do it's magic! You have add plenty of water and lather like you got a pair! Now, grab your puck and sing out:

"This is my Williams, this is brush
It'll lather just fine if I get off my duff!"

Now, let's review.

Price: Out-freaking-standing! You could by a deuce and a half full of this stuff and still have beer money!

Quality: It's been around so long because It's quality! There is more to quality than fancy-pants scents and oh-so-soft creams. Will a tube of Proraso in your pocket stop a bullet like Williams? I thought not!

Scent: It smells like soap, not some cheap short time house! It's soap, not foo-foo juice!

Lather: It lathers just fine, girls, if you want it to! You have to work to lather my beloved Williams. If everybody could lather Williams, it wouldn't BE Williams. As to that lather drying out, stop lollygagging and shave!

Efficacy and Moisturizing: Are you trying to be cute? What the Efficacy does that fancy "Efficacy" word even mean? And Williams doesn't moisturize because the men who settled this country wanted tight skin while they squinted down the sights of their weapons, not to be all soft like maggots!

So you non-hacking creamworms can go home to Mama and cry about your poor little wrists getting all limp and tired from trying to lather Williams. The real shavers will proudly pound that puck in to sudsy submission! Get out of my sight!

Now, excuse me for a few hours, I have to go and make this Williams lather...

Citizensoldierny has died and is born again hard with Williams! Let me see your lather! That's not a lather, this is a lather!

What is your major malfunction, numb brush? Go out and get some Williams!

Topgumby,
God that was scary! Brought me back to basic and my fond memories of toe the line , front and back goes, etc.:yikes:

BTW it was a great response , I will definitely remember it every time I whip my williams into submission from here on out.

Williams is a solid, tallow-based soap. Nothing wrong with it at all, except that some people have trouble getting their best lather from it.
