What's new

Don't do this.

I had put my Proraso soap into my Old Spice mug. I figured being out in the open air wouldn't hurt it. It turns out that this soap really should be kept in a covered container, like the one it came in. I guess Proraso soap isn't so much of a soft soap as a hard cream. The soap hasn't gone rancid or anything like that, but even with daily use it continues to dry out. While the soap still lathers fine, loading the brush sufficiently to have enough lather for three passes has become increasingly difficult. I used to be able to load for 20 to 25 seconds and I was set. Now, even 30 or 35 seconds still leaves me with almost no lather in the brush after two passes. I'm going to put the soap back in its original container with a little water and see if I can re-hydrate it.

Lesson learned.

You could make a lid for your Old Spice mug. The other thing that I normally do with soaps is put a bit of water on top while I'm in the shower. Then, dump that water into my lather bowl. It softens the soap just enough and helps load the brush.

Don't worry. After lathering with it a few times, it should start to behave as normal. It's just the top layer that needs to be removed.

People say to cover Mitchell's too but I have found it works fine even if undercovered, just rub water on the surface first with your hand...

I remember reading a thread on here where someone purposely took the Old Spice cream in the tube and dried it out (long term exposure to air) to make it into a soap puck. They claimed it worked great. Maybe your Proraso will do the same. Try soaking it with a little water while you shower as mentioned above.

Im pretty sure the OP is reffering to the Proraso soap in the tub, not the cream from a tube

I leave the lid on mine and it works like a charm every time i go to use it

I have a puck of tabac that is suffering the same way in an Old Spice mug. Some soaps fair better than others in open topped storage it seems. Once I get that puck out of the OS mug, I'll not be using it as a soap mug, that's for sure. I'll prolly end up on the BST. I only bought it from the BST for the Tabac that was in it. lol

You should be able to rehydrate it, then just cover it with saran wrap or something when your not using it.
Good luck!

I'm aware as to what the OP was referring to. My point was that the air should not hurt the product.

While I'm sure air doesn't hurt the product evaporation of ingredients can certainly change the performance of a product. Hard soaps are probably the least affected but the fragrance oils will dissipate and be noticeable. While you can re-introduce water to make the soap usable again it may not perform the same as intended and there is no way to re-introduce the other volatile compounds lost to the atmosphere.

I put some water on it last night and put the lid back on the container. It seems to have restored the soap. It actually preformed fine before--same cushion and glide as always. It just didn't produce the volume of lather that it used to. Today I had plenty of lather again.
