Don Draper shaving on Mad Men, Season 2, Episode 6

Just starting to get into a terrific cable TV show, Mad Men that is totally set in 1962. This whole show is throwback to the era of my extreme youth (my date code is D3).

Anyway in the final scene of this episode, the dashingly handsome but consistently troubled Don Draper, advertising executive extraordinaire, is shown wet shaving!!! He is using a shave brush, but he whips up some of the wimpiest lather I have ever seen (get this man some Tabac or at least some vintage Old Spice).

His razor? Sadly not a Fat Boy, not an Executive, not an an Aristocrat. No, it was a lowly black handled Super Speed!! And with no blade judging by the stubble left behind after each pass!

Terrific show by the way!! Can anyone tell me the years this razor was in production?

It looked like this:

Yes, watched this on DVD last weeekend and I too called the razor as a black handled super speed. You're right about the miserable lather also.

All in all though, It's an awesome show!

I saw this just the other day. As soon as it came on I saw the problem. The black handle super speed wasn't introduced until 1966 (according to our wiki).

Pretty sure the weak lather was for production value. We needed to see his facial reaction when his daughter said something that reminded him of his mistress.

Thanks Gary! I was wondering about that point! In general they are pretty accurate as to the time and products/items but not everyone is as fanatical about razors as we are.

I just purchased a black handle super speed and its date code was U-3...so 1974. I believe it was made up into the 80's

Heres a pic of my black handle...i think its the same one

Yeah, I was watching at work (we have long hours of nothing to do but watch TV and track satellites). As soon as it came on my co-workers said something to me and I said "Hey that's wrong!" They laughed at me of course...:blink::blink:

Could it be that the trend-setting power of Hollywood might save us from Shavepocalypse???

I think you might be onto something. Was watching the movie "The Invention of Lying".. There is a part in the movie where the main character Ricky Gervais grows a beard and long hair out of dispair because the girl he loves is getting married to a jerk.. Anyway he gets convinced by a friend to go to the wedding and hands him a Black Beauty SA Gillette to clean up.:thumbup:

@sledgehammer
Just watched that yesterday.....very disapointed in the movie...could have took that plot alot further and funnier

Yeah, I figured that when I saw it. But those SuperSpeeds are plentiful, so I'm not surprised they went with one. Why hold up a shoot because you can't locate an Aristocrat?
