What's new

Does your beard/5 o clock shadow' show up sooner with DE?

Simple question: For those who have moved to DE (or single) from cartridges, do you find your stubble return much quicker in the day compared to cartridges, even if the morning shave was excellent? Or is it just an illusion :) I've been noticing this pattern for several days.

I find it does come back quicker if I have not gone ATG, if I have then it is about the same as I got a closer shave with a cartridge than a 2 pass DE shave, but pretty much the same as a cartridge with a 3 pass shave.

I have read people saying the hair is easier to see because it has been cut cleaner with a DE or something like that and that's why you can see it sooner, but that isn't the case for me.

Ning, my experience exactly! I've stopped ATG and by noon, I can see a stubble like I shaved 12 hours ago! Huh.

Mine actually shows up later, like at 5:15.

I can't say there is a real difference over time. Perhaps my closest DE shaves last a bit longer at the end of the day. But I find it necessary to shave every morning now, while I didn't think it was necessary when I used the Fusion. I suspect that has more to do with my close facial inspections since starting DE and my desire to experiment with something new, than it does with how much hair is on my face.

Damn true. I often catch myself starting at other guys - trying to figure out if their shave is better than mine and if they are DE users, single razor users or cartridge users. So far, I've managed to catch myself doing that before they do. It will be terribly embarrassing if they catch me first...

My shaves seem to last longer with DE now I am paying more attention and generally getting a slightly closer shave. I fully agree with the stubble growing back differently and to me this can give the illusion of not needing to shave again quite so soon. YMMV

Yup, it comes back quicker. Except I am comparing to a straight razor. My shaves from a straight last longer than a DE which last longer than a cartridge.

Interesting. The last 2-3 shaves I have NOT used ATG and the stubble comes back much quicker. Well, maybe not THAT interesting as it's obviously less of a close shave maybe :)

I'm going to say I get a closer shave with my DE. Also, I seem to be able shave everyday since starting last week with no negative outcomes. I do WTG and ATG with both DE and twin blade cat razors. I can go without shaving for about 24 hrs and still appear to have a DFS.

No way. I shave at about 8 every morning. One reason I went DE is that I was getting way too much 5 o'clock shadow with cartridge shaving (There was the cost savings thing, too!). I only went one pass admittedly, but I was looking pretty shabby at the end of the day. With a two pass and touch up DE shave, I have less stubble by the next morning's shave than I was getting at 5 o'clock with cartridge shaving.

I actually can go longer before a 5'O'clock shadow shows up but then I have Homer Simpson beard and my shadow used to show up just after the AS got splashed on when using carts.

It shows up later. But then if the shave is closer that is bound to be the case. Of course I never tried a 3 pass shave with a cartridge and I am not going to try either. Cartridges are in the distant past for me.

I check boxed ATG in response to arjunrc

During a shave, I go WTG, XTG, and ATG.

Gotcha. Thanks for the clarification. I typically go ATG as well but not always on every part of my face. Depends on a few factors.

While that makes sense for the most part, I'm not convinced it is the entire story. As I have said before I cut my fingernails about the same length every time. Sometimes they need clipped again in a week. Other times not for two. Hair, like nails, seems to vary in how quickly it grows. At least that is my experience.
