Does pre oil applications prevent brushes from being as effective?

I used a pre oil sample and found it caused the badger hair to stick together and not maintain the open freely moving feeling I was used to. It also seemed hard to get off the brush. Many seem to like a pre oil application before they use the cream and hot water.

What are your thoughts about the oil affecting the brush?

I found that the preshave oil caused my lather to breakdown, so I quit using it. If you are getting oil on the hairs of your brush, you may be using to much oil, or not enough cream. You will also need to clean your brush before the next use.

I use preshave oil with nearly every shave and have never had an issue building lather or with my brush hairs sticking together. As Mike said, check to see how much oil you are using. You only need a few drops, well rubbed into a very wet face. Let the oil sit a minute or so before lathering (optional but I find it helps).

What PSO are you using, anyway?

i tried the Art of Shaving oil. I tried the oil with a lot more than just a few drops. I think that was the problem

AOS is my favorite ***, but it is very thick (a lot of guys don't like that). For the big (2oz) bottle with the wide opening, I put one hand flat across the open top, turn the bottle upside down so no oil can escape--my palm stops it from coming out. Then i turn it back over. The tiny amount on my palm from stopping the oil is enough for me.

I wouldn't shave without pre-shave oil/lotion, however many don't like it. But many enjoy face lathering and I do not. So to each his own. . . . If you are having brush or lather problems there could be several things wrong; (a.) you are using too much oil/lotion, (b.) you are not letting it have a chance to be absorbed before applying your lather. . . . . Otherwise it should be happy shaving.
