Does hot water dull straight razors and blades?

I'll let the Masters chime in here on str8s...but WRT DE blades my two cents is no. While I have no examined a blade before/after hot water immersion under a microscope...the results speak for themselves. I can get a good 3-4 shaves out of a DE blade. I think the dulling comes more from touching my rough whiskers!

I can't think of any reason why this would happen.

Because as the water is heated, the increased energy will cause latent ionic bonds to break, resulting in the separation of impurities - along with ferric and cupric particles from the piping carrying the water. :001_tongu

boy sounds impressive doesnt it?

But, heated water contains less dissolved oxygen, and it is contact with dissolved oxygen in the water that precipitates Fe to Iron Oxide, so hot water should be less likely to dull a blade right?

No, I can not say I have noticed that water temperature has any effect on the blade other than to wash soap off more easily.

Guys, what you think does straight razor edge and DE blades get dull if rinsed in hot water?

NOPE. All blades; DE, STR8Ts, kitchen knives, pocket knives, LAWNMOWER blades, chainsaws, etc. GET DULL BY CUTTING THINGS. NOW, if you take that hot water, place it into a vessel, insert said vessel into the sub zero temperature box in your kitchen for a day, then remove now solid block of once hot water and proceed to cut that with your DE or STR8T YES that will dull it!!:001_cool::w00t:

Now don't start speading rumors! Times are tough enough, what would happen if men stopped using hot water? Why the whole economy would just fall appart. No more hot water heaters, no more plumbers to replace hot water heaters, a significant decrease in energy consumption, why the list goes on and on. I'd really like to find the guy, or girl, who started that rumor! Why I never........:w00t::w00t::w00t:

HOT WATER CAUSES GLOBAL WARMING!!!!
:w00t::w00t::w00t::w00t::w00t::w00t::w00t::w00t:

Hey, it's not just hot water ... it's any running water. Look at what running water did to the Grand Canyon! If it can wear away a mile of rock, it can certainly dull a straight razor ... in a few million years.

Good point!

So, I should be ok unless I leave my razors under a continuous stream of water

So, if you apply every principle presented here properly instead and placed at the correct angle, a honing action is attained ... AND we solve global warming

Wanting for wisdom
You have all been judged!

As having participated in the thread most likely to be mistaken for a Monty Python skit:lol::lol::lol:

Am I wrong, or was this topic discussed in one of the Cohen brother's films? I think it was Miller's Crossing. I want to say The Man Who Wasn't There because of the barber setting, but only because it was the same actor (Jon Polito) in both films. Great pencil line, by the way.

No, and in fact if you were to hold it at the right angle under a big enough stream of hot water for long enough it should even hone itself for you. :wink2:
Granted, you might have to ask your great great grandkids how it shaves though.
