Do you wash off your aftershave by mid-day or so?

Soothing to the skin as all this stuff may be, it's got to clog the pores. I only wash with soap once daily, unless conditions dictate otherwise, but I give my face a water wash before noon to freshen up and I can tell the aftershave is still there when I do because the water perks up the smell.

You?

Not me, but then I use splashes and not balms.

I can't see any problem with leaving a splash on. If you think a balm might be clogging things up, perhaps a splash is your answer.

Most aftershave splashes are shallow on the ingredients outside of alcohol and water so you should not notice anything on your face other than the fragrance after the dry down.

Not here. Keep in mind that skin is not all the same for everyone. Yours may be prone to clogging but that doesn't mean that everyone is.

Also a possible cause and/or contributing factor. I'm a splash user.

I wash my face twice a day. In the morning when I shower and in the evening when I shower or shave or do both. Throughout the day I will apply facial moisturizer/SPF a couple times to keep things moisturized. My skin type is normal to dry so I don't feel the need to do any cleansing during the day. Moisturizing/UV protection is more important for me. I get occasional pimples, but never any major breakouts.

Could be. I certainly KNOW whatever chemicals comprise the fragrances are indeed all over my face many hours later and suspect they clog the pores without providing additional protective benefit, and even the smell has disappeared.

Do you use cologne as well?

When I'm refreshing mid afternoon, I'm doing so strictly for the scent. If I wear cologne I usually just go with witch hazel.

Are you having problems with clogged pores? I couldn't tell from your OP. It sounded like you were asking if it could happen. If you are, having problems, what products are you using, brand wise?

Toothpick

Needs milk and a bidet!
I think "pores" and everything to do with them is a myth made up by corporate to sell face wash, and pore cleansing creams.

"buy this to clean your pores" "buy this to prevent your pores from clogging"

I've always left my AS/balm/lotion on all day long and never once had a problem.

We are all different so maybe i'm just an anomaly.

No real problems per se, in fact once I started the wetshaving regimen with quality facial soalp, alum, WH and quality aftershave my skin improved quite a bit. I no longer use creams like Eucerin to control dryness and chafing.

My point is simply that after the aftershave has done its soothing and the fragrance has gone, what benefit could the residual chemicals do you and why not keep the pores and skin chemical free as best as possible?

I use splashes and don't believe it clogs my pores. I was my face each night to clean it but I don't feel the need to do an earlier wash to clear AS. If I used a balm instead I could see considering an extra wash.

This should help. I think a lot of people tend to over-apply/use too much moisturizer which then causes problems.

Also, out of curiosity, what aftershave(s) are you using?

Thanks,
Mike

You might be onto it, thanks.

I'm still trying to experiment with a number of tonics, with the goal of settling on 1 or 2 mainstays.

Currently I really like Spanish Floid and Clubman original. When I finish the Musgo and Proraso splash I won't go back. And the jury is still out on a couple others. Finally, I've got about 5 oz of 40+ year old Zizanie which is for special occasions and a 50 year old NOS Old Spice en route.

The Musgo, Proraso and Clubman can't be applied by the palm full and full strength unless you want to smell like the head madam's room in a New Orleans brothel.

Its a process...
