do you observe how other men are dressed in a formal setting?

My apologies if there's already a thread along these lines. I coulda swore there was, but my search yielded nothing. anyway, since forums are inevitably chocked with sartorial debates I thought i'd ask some of you what your opinions are of how other men suit up. For example, do you always check to see what kind of shoes a guy is wearing? Are they polished? What brand are they? Does that guy's suit fit or is it too frumpy like a potato sack? What kind of tie knot is he wearing? Is he wearing a pocket square? Is he showing cuff? Do his shirt and tie match his suit? Does he have good color coordination?I have to admit to doing all of the above. I feel that by observing how other men dress in a formal setting it helps me refine my own sense of style and figure out what I like or dislike. Of course, I try not to be so obvious when checking out another man's wardrobe but if a particular article of clothing intrigues me I might ask about it.what about you?

I undress them in my mind.

Actually I'm pretty much oblivious to what other men wear and I probably don't pay enough attention to what I have on either. I'm glad my wife has raised our sons to be a little more clothes conscious.

I always do that. Discreetly.

...also with casual clothing.

I always check watches. I can't help it. Casual, formal, doesn't matter. And not just the watch, but how it's worn. I always wear my watch on the left arm, with the face on the "bottom" of my wrist.

I check watches and shoes...Unless they are sneakers...Leather shoes must be polished. The watch tells time and what YOU think of time and yourself..IMHO

Not really although I am sure I have a general impression. I also seem to pick up a general idea of what folks in general are wearing as far as widths of ties, and subtle arguable fashionable-type things. Not high fashion, just general business wear.

If someone is wearing a particularly good looking suit, or an interesting watch or cuff links, I suppose I might notice. Re the suit I might try to figure out why it was eye catching.

I suppose I might notice shoes that seemed out of place.

Casual stuff, not really.

We humans are pack animals ... or so I've herd ... and we want to make sure that we both "fit in with" and "stand out from" the crowd. We want to spot the guys who don't fit in.

Watches and shoes. Both tell you so much about the person. Particularly love to catch a glimpse of a Patek in the wild.

Sexual Orientation has nothing to do with observing other peoples' dressing/grooming habits......
Having said, yes +1 on discreetly checking out others' shoes, watches, way clothes fit, etc. As much as we hate to admit it, we are perceived the way in which we present ourselves.

Being heterosexual, no.

... um ... not that there's anything wrong with that?

Let's not go any farther down "that road" ... we'll end up with all sorts of silly misconceptions about what "real men" do or don't do.

I'll just say this ... there are a lot of "Pass/fail the gay test" demotivational posters out there that are both
a) highly drool-worthy, and
b) highly inappropriate for posting here.

And yes, all men notice what other men are wearing. No matter how manly a man you are, you notice. Go to a local sporting event ... in playoffs, preferably. See all the guys wearing the home team's jersey? See how manly they are? See the one guy walk past and sit down nearby ... wearing the jersey of the visiting team ... with the name and number sewn on of the Public Enemy #1 player who knocked the local hero out of the series with a dirty hit last game? See the manly men notice what that guy is wearing?

Um, yeah.

Usually I can't be bothered to see what anybody else is doing. If I have time to kill, for example, on a subway ride, I'll see what people are wearing - mostly to figure out what works and does not work on other people to determine what might be applicable to me.

Being in college I tend to look upon most guys my own age in disgust. Often if they are in something formal they've done it halfa**ed and look horrible. At the same time I do notice when a man is well dressed.
