What's new

Do you attempt to recruit?

I offered my wife a go with one of my DEs, and she said "are you nuts?".

I did show a friend of mine some of my stuff. He liked the vintage old spice, my Hoffritz Slant and my adjustables. But he never showed interest in pursuing it.

Any luck?

Honestly, I've tried, but most of my friends are east asian and at my age (21) not a lot have enough facial hair...

I do have one friend who uses a shavette for touch ups!

I have offered to lend stuff to my dad but he refuses to try it. Just tells me that he didn't like it back in the day. I try to enable him to aftershaves, so far it's worked out ok.

I have tried, was kind of successful with one but once the blades ran out he went back to disposables.

People just aren't that interested, they find it strange that I am even bringing up shaving as a topic of conversation most of the time.

I think it is better if you discover it for yourself.

I mentioned safety razors to a guy at work because he saw me buy a styptic stick and was curious. About a month later he was full on wet shaving, and telling his friends about it. For Father's Day I bought shave soap and brushes for 4 guys in my family. One of them (my brother in law) now shaves with the Merkur 39c and has a shave den that's starting to look like mine already. My sister (his wife) tried the Merkur Bakelite on her legs and said she might switch. It's pretty cool that such a fun hobby seems to spread on it's own sometimes.

Yes, I advised one of my friends to switch and he has. We always talk about new gear that we want. It's a strange hobby, but I see it as a beneficial one. I also now look out for shower gels, aftershaves, facial scrubs not only more organic but better made if that makes sense.

I have had no luck at all my cousin is 30 and thinks he knows it all will have no part in it. My bro and law thinks I am crazy for making my own lather. My best buddy at work thinks I am crazy (his grandfather was a barber) only my gf has gotten it with her pink lady gillette and Astra blade. I just don't know why one won't want to try the old school way to shave with the warm lather brushed on the close shave etc. oh well to each their own. Cheers

I think my generation is so "disposable". No one wants to spend a few extra dollars or minutes to enjoy fine craftsmanship or experience.

No, I do not. My colleagues think my love for vintage pens, mechanical watches, and quality stationery is weird enough ... no need to add to that lol.

Oh yeah....I look for opportunities. My brother on law is a full convert (and probably lurking here somewhere.) gave starter sets to two people at work...one uses it daily...the other one is probably gathering dust. Working on mother friend who sounds interested. So I'm 2 for 4 so far...and yes....most people think I'm nuts. (Traditional wet shaving talk is only a piece of that though.)

I tried to tell people about it when I first started but it is a strange subject to bring up in casual conversation. So I stopped talking about it.

My dad told me that I would cut up my face. But I did bring my brother in law to start the same time as me. I also got one of my friends at church interested. He bought a straight and needs to have it honed before he starts.

Lets see here. My dad, brother, two cousins, one friend, and a local tobacconist. I guess I do a little recruiting

I just gave my nephew a starter set for his 19th birthday. He seemed to like. He used it right away and had me stand nearby to make sure he was doing it properly.

I've been trying. When my friend told me he was having ingrown hair issues. So I was able to talk him into a Lord razor and a VdH brush, soap and cup set. Also gave him a tube of Herbs of Bulgaria lavender. He tried it and said was nice and sharp. But went back to shaving with his disposable's and only uses the Herbs of Bulgaria cream that he just wipes on his face.

One of my other friends bought a cheap straight, as he said he wanted to get into straight razor shaving. But never got around to getting anything else. So for his birthday I picked him up a strop, puck of VdH, CO Bigelow and a badger brush. I asked him a few weeks later if he got around to trying it. He told me that he tried the CO Bigelow by rubbing it on his face and it was different? But that's all he's used.

I'll keep trying, but not to hard unless they show some serious interest.

I've tried many, many times, and I'm quite sure I've struck out on just about all of them. I think something has to happen to make one change from their accepted way of shaving. As for me, I was quite content with my old way of shaving until I came across an ad or something about the book on gourmet shaving. That ad caught my eye and I bought the book. That did it for me, and that was well over 5 years ago.

One no go and two conversions
The no go was my brother, loves the brush and the TOBS Shaving Shop but has yet to work up the nerve to try the Fat Boy I found for him.
The two conversions were guys that work loading docks I deliver to, first one shortly after I started traditional shaving and was talking about it to him so I PIFed him a 55 Super Speed that I'd gotten spare in a lot off The 'Bay and a blade assortment and he's still going.
The second one I'd mentioned finding a badger travel brush and knew what I meant so I asked if he was a traditional shaver and he replied no but had picked up brush and soap shaving while in the Navy(pressurized cans of canned goo do not respond well to transport in an unpressurized aircraft cargo hold)and told I had a spare razor I'd bring next time round so about 3 weeks ago I handed him a spare Old Type, blade assortment and info about B&B and Merz(knew about Merz) and looks like he's sold on vintage Gillette now as well.
