Do I need a third brush?

Hi all, I'm building up quite a collection of shaving paraphernalia, partly through wanting to try new things and partly through the onset of AD.
I shave mainly with a sledgehammer DE but am making the transition over to straights, (maybe for weekends, maybe for all shaves depending on how much I improve).

At the moment I only have two brushes, a small pure badger from TOBS and an extra large super from EJ.
My question is, will I benefit from adding a third brush? The TOBS is perfect for travel so I mainly use the EJ for everyday shaving. To me, it doesn't feel very floppy or very stiff, more middle of the road (but I don't have much to compare it to so I may be wrong there). If I wanted to try a different brush that performed in a different way, what would give me the most different performance, a really stiff brush or a super soft silvertip?

I don't really know whether my brush is better with creams or soaps (which i use in equal amounts) as I use it with both. Perhaps the EJ is better with creams and there is a good brush out there that would perform better with soaps? Or vice versa?

I'm less interested in collecting lots of high quality (but similar) brushes and more interested in getting hold of equipment that will perform in different ways so I can experiment and discover my favourite combinations. Price is not so much of an issue within reason, I only plan on getting one more brush for the forseeable future so I don't mind spending a few dollars on it.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You might need a Rooney, a Shavemac, or both. :biggrin1:

For soaps, the Rooney is probably a better choice. I got a 1/2 in super, and I do adore it.

If your happy with what you have then NOPE. There will still be plenty of brushes out there when you NEED a new one.

Get a good boar for your Soaps. A good Omega or Boreal will set you back less than 30 bucks and you will be very happy.

To be perfectly honest, no one "needs" more than one brush. Generations of men got along fine with just one and there are many on here who do the same. "Want" is another matter entirely though and that's why they seem to keep multiplying in my bathroom.

You don't need a third brush. You need to add a fourth and then a fifth. Honestly though if you want something truly different then go for a boar. For another badger, a Rooney or Simpson should be much denser than what you have.

AFG is right on the money. There's a big difference between "need" and "want" as I convinced myself yesterday that I didn't need a Kent BK4 or BLK4 as much as I wanted it.

need a 3rd brush? probably not, but having a back up or 2 isnt a bad idea. Brushes dont last forever, the spares will be there when one gets lost or worn out.

Two's company. But three is a happy crowd

( Frankly I think if u r satisfied with the two existing ones, it is pretty sufficient, but no wrong going with what ur heart wants )

In my opinion, two would be more than enough. One for hard soaps (a good boar brush), and one for creams. Other than that, it's all up to you and your preferences.

There is always need for a new brush:biggrin:
I have three, all made myself. One is a Silvertip, one is a finest and one is pure made with a knot from Shavemac. Personally, I like them all, but mostly use the finest.

If you can afford it, I would say you definitely need a third brush. My opinion hardly matters, though. Think of it this way. How will you ever confirm or disconfirm whether you need a trio of brushes unless you get a third?

In theory, you don't really NEED any brushes. But it doesn't matter what you NEED anyway, it matters what you WANT, and you definitely WANT another brush. Heck I have four, and I still wouldn't mind a few more.

A boar brush would be a big change, and you might like it. I have three brushes--a Vulfix 660 Finest, a 23mm Shavemac SB-102 DO1 and an Omega boar brush. (I don't know the model number.). To me, the boar comes in third out of the three, but it works well and is fun to use. For real luxury, though, the Shavemac is the one.
